Notes on Davis, Iglesias, rotation and more

First baseman Chris Davis remains away from the Orioles as they finish their two-game series against the Yankees at Camden Yards. He also was absent from the ballpark last night.

Manager Brandon Hyde isn't allowed to provide specific information on Davis, who's likely under COVID-19 protocol. The Orioles haven't replaced him on the active roster.

"C.D. is still unavailable today," Hyde said during his Zoom conference call.

"I'm going to leave it at that."

Davis worked out with the team Tuesday night and had a Zoom conference call with the media, but he's at home again today. Hyde couldn't provide any sort of timetable for a return.

Shortstop José Iglesias is day-to-day with a sore left quadriceps muscle. He exited last night's game after the sixth inning and isn't in tonight's lineup.

The injury isn't interfering with his work at the plate, where he's gone 8-for-16 with four doubles and three RBIs.

"Really hot these first four games," Hyde said. "It's tough to not write him in there for tonight's game, but want to do what's best for him long-term, want to make sure we're taking care of him. I would love to have him as much as possible and want to make sure that he's healthy, but that double in the first off (Gerrit) Cole last night, he felt it grab a little bit and he kind of tried to play through it the rest of the game.

"That third at-bat when he hit the ground ball up the middle, that normally would be an infield hit and he just couldn't go like he normally does. Decided to take him out and he's a little sore today."

Alex Cobb and Wade LeBlanc are listed as starters for the first two games of the weekend series against the Rays at Camden Yards. The last spot is TBD, which could be Tommy Milone or Kohl Stewart. They were in the bullpen last night.

"We're going to try to navigate these next couple and then figure out who are starter's going to be," Hyde said. "I think both of those guys would definitely be strong candidates to start that Sunday."

The Rays are starting Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow and Yonny Chirinos.

John Means has come off the 10-day injured list to start tonight and he's on a pitch count as he eases back into competition.

"I'm hoping for the three- to four-inning range, which means he'll probably want to stay out there longer, but we're going to be pretty careful with him tonight. His first start in a while, not totally built up, so we're going to keep it short tonight," Hyde said.

"It's fun to write his name in there to start tonight. I know he's really excited to get back out there and we miss not having him around. To have him make his first start tonight against the Yankees, it's something he's really looked forward to, looking forward to watching him pitch. And I expect him to give us a quality three or four innings."
