Looking at closer issues around baseball

Looking at closer issues around baseball
The Nationals lead the National League East despite a bullpen that brings daily turbulence. This week at Nationals Park they will see first-hand that they aren't the only team with late-inning issues. The Nationals' bullpen ERA (5.40) is 29th in baseball. Seattle's bullpen has the highest ERA in the majors at 5.44, while San Diego is 27th at 5.04. The Mariners and Padres play in D.C. this week. Edwin Díaz, and his blazing fastball, was the Mariners closer at the season's start, but he...

Did the Rockies improve their bullpen enough to compete in NL West?

Did the Rockies improve their bullpen enough to compete in NL West?
The Los Angeles Dodgers will take aim at their fifth consecutive National League West championship, but their biggest rival, the San Francisco Giants, will have something to say about that, especially since they've fixed their leaky bullpen with former Nationals closer Mark Melancon. The surprise team in the division could be the Colorado Rockies. They've beefed up their bullpen and think their rotation is strong enough to allow them to play meaningful games in September. Here's a look at...

Nationals acquire catcher Derek Norris from the Padres
The Nationals have acquired veteran catcher Derek Norris from the San Diego Padres in exchange for a minor league pitcher. Norris was drafted by the Nationals in the fourth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft out of Goddard High School in Kansas. He accepted the Nationals' professional contract offer instead of a full-ride baseball scholarship to Wichita State. "I'm very excited to be back where everything started for me," Norris said via text message. "Excited to be back in the...

Could moving Bryce Harper around in lineup spark offense?

Could moving Bryce Harper around in lineup spark offense?
For the third game in a row, the Nationals scored only three runs. Their starting pitching and bullpen allowed only two runs, so they were able to squeeze out a dramatic 3-2 walk-off win over the Padres. But the lineup had difficulty for most of Saturday night putting together good rallies against Padres veteran Edwin Jackson. Despite managing to get at least a man on base in each of his six innings, plus a hit in five of those frames, they scored only on a sac fly by Daniel Murphy and a RBI...

Game 97 lineups: Padres at Nationals
The Nationals welcome in the Padres to D.C., searching to get back on track after losing three of their last four games. Washington split four games with San Diego earlier this season, winning the first two from June 16-19 at Petco Park. Five Nationals players, including Stephen Strasburg and Daniel Murphy, were invited to last week's All-Star Game in San Diego. Murphy has hit in eight straight games, hitting 12-for-30 (.400) with five doubles, four homers, 13 RBIs and six runs scored. He...

Does Joe Ross need to employ the changeup with more frequency?

Does Joe Ross need to employ the changeup with more frequency?
Right-hander Joe Ross continued to pitch to his strengths as the Nationals dropped the Padres 7-5 Friday night at Petco Park. Ross completed six innings, and allowed three runs on six hits, with two walks and six strikeouts. Between the end of the second and the beginning of the fourth inning, he set down eight straight batters. He finished with 95 pitches, 68 for strikes. He is now 6-4 this season with a 3.13 ERA. As with most starters, hitters do a better job of trying to figure out Ross the...

Werth and Zimmerman homer, Ross another quality start (Nats beat Padres 4-2)
The Padres tallied the first run of the game after Joe Ross rolled through the first three innings. The Nationals right-hander did not allow a hit through the first three frames. But in the fourth, Cory Spangenberg hit a dribbler in front of home plate. Catcher Wilson Ramos retrieved it, but through wildly to first. The ball was not close to first baseman Ryan Zimmerman and sailed down the line into foul territory. Spangenberg ended up at third base. Ramos was charged with a two-base error on...

Nats game blog: Nats have one more shot at series win over Friars
The Nationals have another shot tonight at a series win as they wrap up a three-game set against the San Diego Padres. Washington has gone 4-2 against the Friars this season and is 16-9 against San Diego since 2012. But the Padres lead the overall series 38-30. The Nationals also haven't lost a series to the Padres since 2011. Right-hander Joe Ross (4-5, 3.56 ERA) opposes righty Andrew Cashner (5-12, 4.03 ERA). Ian Desmond is 3-for-10 against Cashner, while Ryan Zimmerman has the lone...

Brotherly love: Little brother Joe Ross looks to return favor to Tyson Ross in series finale
Nationals 22-year-old right-hander Joe Ross has impressed from his major league debut as a pitcher who doesn't get rattled. That is sometimes a surprising trait in a rookie hurler. In his last start against the Brewers on Saturday, Khrys Davis slammed a solo homer to start the seventh inning. Ross did not let the run alter his goal and was able to get the next three outs and complete a tremendous quality start. He went seven innings and allowed only six hits, one run and no walks while...

Janssen update, plus notes on Giolito, Solis, Barrett, Strasburg, Treinen and bullpen

Janssen update, plus notes on Giolito, Solis, Barrett, Strasburg, Treinen and bullpen
Nationals right-hander Casey Janssen, who is on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation, got knocked around Sunday in his second rehab assignment with the high Single-A Potomac Nationals. Arriving in the seventh, Janssen allowed a home run, double and triple, but finished the inning. Of course, you don't want to get knocked around in a rehab outing, but more importantly for Janssen is how the shoulder feels the day after. If he feels good Monday, his next outing would likely be Tuesday....

Nationals waste Werth's first-inning double (Padres win 4-3 in 11)

Nationals waste Werth's first-inning double (Padres win 4-3 in 11)
The Nationals let a good opportunity get away from them in the top of the first of tonight's game against the Padres at Petco Park. Two hard-hit balls with one out and the Nationals were in business. Kevin Frandsen singled to right and Jayson Werth, looking fresh after a getting Friday's game off, raked a double to deep right field. Frandsen went to third. But with Adam LaRoche at the plate, Frandsen got caught too far off third base and was thrown out by catcher Rene Rivera for the second...
