Another Adams homer, another Nats deficit (Cards win 5-2)

The Nationals had the bases loaded with one out in the second, and failed to push a run across in a scoreless tie. In the bottom half of the inning, they paid for it.

Allen Craig singled up the middle and Matt Adams launched a two-run homer to right off Doug Fister. Yes, the same Adams who homered on Friday and Saturday. That's three games in a row with home runs since he was activated off the disabled list Friday.

Fister stranded runners at second and third to escape further damage in the inning, but the Cardinals lead 2-0.

Update: Matt Holliday hit a solo homer in the third, extending the lead to 3-0. Fister has now yielded eight home runs in his eight starts.

Update II: The Nats are on the board in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Jayson Werth drew a walk to force in a run and bring Ryan Zimmerman to the plate with two outs. But Zimmerman grounded to third for the inning's final out.

Update III: It didn't take long for the Cardinals to restore their three-run cushion. Kolten Wong tripled to right and scored on Holliday's sacrifice fly.

Update IV: Fister is done after six innings. He allowed four runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out two. Ross Detwiler is on for the bottom of the seventh.

The Cards tacked on another run in the seventh on a two-out walk to Holliday and a run-scoring double by Craig.

Update V: The Nats made it interesting in the ninth, getting a run on a bases-loaded walk to pinch-hitter Adam LaRoche to get within 5-2. But Jayson Werth popped out in foul territory to first base and Trevor Rosenthal preserved the lead. It's a 5-5 road trip for the Nationals.
