The Nationals have announced 18 non-roster invitees to spring training, including two of their top infield prospects and a pitcher trying to return to the majors for the first time 2015 after a myriad of injuries.
The two infield prospects - Luis Garcia, 18, and Carter Kieboom, 21 - both figure to get a lot of playing time around the diamond at various positions. Garcia, who has played shortstop, second base and third base, slashed .298/.335/.406 with seven homers and 46 RBIs for low Single-A Hagerstown and high Single-A Potomac last season. Kieboom has played mostly shortstop, but played second base in the Arizona Fall League. He hit .280/.357/.444 with 16 homers and 69 RBIs between Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg in 2018.
Right-hander Aaron Barrett, 31, will come to camp, hoping to continue his recovery from multiple injuries that interrupted a promising career. He went 6-3 with a 3.47 ERA and a 1.257 WHIP in 90 games during the 2014-15 seasons. But he underwent Tommy John surgery in September 2015, had surgery to remove bone spurs from his left ankle later that year and then fractured his right elbow while rehabbing from Tommy John in July 2016.
Barrett signed a minor league deal with the Nats last offseason and pitched in 20 games for short-season Single-A Auburn, going 2-0 with a 1.74 ERA in 20 2/3 innings.
Other non-roster invitees are right-handers Henderson Ãlvarez, Scott Copeland, Wil Crowe, J.J. Hoover and Ronald Peña; left-hander Vidal Nuño; catchers Tres Barrera and Taylor Gushue; infielders José Marmolejos, Jake Noll, Matt Reynolds, Brandon Snyder and Jacob Wilson; and outfielders Hunter Jones and Chuck Taylor.
Pitchers and catchers report to FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches tomorrow, with the first workout for batteries scheduled for Thursday. Position players report on Feb. 18, with the first full-squad workout the next day.
