PHILADELPHIA - Center fielder Denard Span was named the Washington Nationals' 2015 nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award presented by Chevrolet, Major League Baseball announced today.
The Roberto Clemente Award pays tribute to the Hall of Famer's achievements and character by recognizing current players who truly understand the value of helping others. Span is one of the 30 finalists from each Major League club for the annual award given to the player who best represents the game of baseball through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement.
Span will be honored during pregame ceremonies Sept. 17 when the Nationals play the Marlins. Due to his rehab from hip surgery, Span will not be in attendance. Span's guest and past Span's Fans participant Drew Jackson will be accepting the award on Span's behalf for his ongoing commitment to single-parent families.
Wednesday, Sept. 16 marks the 14th annual Roberto Clemente Day, honoring the 15-time All-Star who died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.
Beginning on Wednesday, fans are encouraged to participate in the process of selecting the winner of the Roberto Clemente Award by visiting ChevyBaseball.com to vote for one of the 30 club nominees.
Span was bothered by injuries since early in spring training, missing the first 12 games of the year. He landed back on the disabled list for 40 games in the middle of the year with back tightness. Span returned for two games before ending his season on Aug. 27 for hip surgery.
Span, who becomes a free agent at the end of the season, batted .301 with five homers, 17 doubles, 22 RBIs, 11 stolen bases and 38 runs scored in 61 games this year.
