Nats place Taylor Jordan on DL, recall Tyler Moore from Triple-A

ATLANTA - The Nationals announced this afternoon that they've placed right-hander Taylor Jordan on the 15-day disabled list with a right lower back strain, and recalled outfielder/first baseman Tyler Moore from Triple-A Syracuse. Manager Davey Johnson told reporters on Wednesday that Jordan had suffered some kind of back injury while at the dentist. The rookie right-hander worked six innings last night, allowing two runs (both unearned) on seven hits. On a team-imposed innings limit this season, his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, Jordan is at 142 total innings between two levels of the minor leagues and the majors. The Nats had set his innings limit at somewhere between 135-155 innings and said they would determine when to shut Jordan down based on how he looked and how he felt physically. It's possible that right-hander Ross Ohlendorf, who is on the disabled list with right shoulder inflammation, could be ready to slide into Jordan's spot in the rotation in four days. Moore would give the Nationals an extra bat on the roster until then. Ohlendorf made his second rehab start last night, working four innings and allowing three runs at high Single-A Potomac. It's unclear whether this will mark the end of Jordan's season or whether the Nats plan to bring him back once he's off the disabled list. The DL stint will get the Nats into September, when rosters expand to 40, so if Jordan is shut down, they won't need to worry about carrying a player on their 25-man roster that isn't participating in games. When the Nationals shut down Stephen Strasburg last season, rosters had already been expanded, so Strasburg occupying a roster spot wasn't an issue. Moore has been on fire at Triple-A of late, going 21-for-62 (.339) with seven doubles, four home runs and 20 RBI for the Chiefs in August. Overall in two stints at Syracuse this season, Moore batted .318 with 10 home runs and 46 RBI in 45 games. Jordan is 1-3 with a 3.66 ERA in nine starts, spanning 51 2/3 innings, for the Nats this season.
