Nats trade Lobstein to Brewers for cash considerations

Just because it's the All-Star break that doesn't mean teams can't make roster moves and trades this week, although Major League Baseball probably prefers no major moves are made to take attention away from its midsummer showcase of the sport's best players.

Commissioner Rob Manfred doesn't have to worry about that because this move won't be headline news as the All-Star Game gets underway later tonight: The Nationals have traded left-hander Kyle Lobstein (who was designated for assignment on July 10) to the Brewers for cash considerations.

Over three relief appearances with the Nats this year, Lobstein allowed three runs, three hits, a homer and a walk with one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings.

Lobstein had his contract selected from Triple-A Rochester on June 29 as part of a handful of roster moves that saw Ryne Harper recalled from Rochester, Tanner Rainey placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to June 28) with a stress reaction in his right tibia and Justin Miller designated for assignment. His season debut on June 30 against the Rays was his first major league appearance since 2016 with the Pirates.

The 31-year-old journeyman and Harper were then optioned back to Rochester on July 6 so Erick Fedde and Kyle Finnegan could be activated from from the injured list. Then, Lobstein was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Jakson Reetz, who was needed as a backup catcher when Yan Gomes landed on the IL with a left oblique strain.

In 16 games out of the bullpen with Rochester, Lobstein was 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA and 25 strikeouts to just eight walks.
