We've got a pitchers' duel in Arizona.
After scoring a combined 15 runs in the last two games, the Nationals and Diamondbacks are scoreless through three innings.
Doug Fister has thrown 52 pitches, allowing three hits and striking out four in three innings. Three of Fister's outs have come via the groundball, which is a good sign for the Nats' sinker ball pitcher.
Fister's counterpart on the mound, Brandon McCarthy, has not allowed a hit and has struck out two through three.
Update: The Diamondbacks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Aaron Hill hit a one-out homer to left off of Fister. It was Hill's second homer in nine at-bats against Fister. Ian Desmond broke up McCarthy's perfect game with a leadoff single to start the fifth inning.
Update II: The Nats had a chance to get on the board against McCarthy in the sixth. Nate McLouth led off the inning by reaching base on an error, stealing second base and advanced to third on a bunt from Fister. McLouth was stranded, however, when Denard Span and Anthony Rendon grounded out to Diambondbacks' second baseman Paul Goldschmidt in consecutive at-bats.
Update III: And we're tied. Jayson Werth's lead-off homer in the seventh has knotted things at 1-1. It was Werth's fifth homer of the season. Fister has thrown 90 pitches through six innings.
Update IV: Fister's afternoon is done after seven strong innings. He allowed just five hits and one earned run, and struck out six on 100 pitches. Fister was much better than his season debut last Friday against the A's.
Update V: The Nats loaded the bases to start the ninth against the Diamondbacks' Brad Ziegler. Desmond's single drove in the go-ahead runs in the ninth to give the Nats a 3-1 lead and break a 1-1 tie. One out later, Tyler Moore extended the Nats' lead to 5-1 with a two-RBI single of his own.
Update VI: The Nats concluded their series with the Diamondbacks after winning 5-1.
