Orioles executive vice president Dan Duquette is continuing his attempts to trade outfielder Delmon Young, who was designated for assignment on July 1.
The Orioles had 10 days to trade or release Young, who was batting .270/.289/.339 with six doubles, two home runs and 16 RBIs in 52 games in his second season with the team. He was 2-for-19 in his last eight games.
"We're still working with a couple of teams and hopefully it will come together," Duquette said. "We have a couple more days."
Duquette confirmed that he's talking to teams in both leagues.
The non-waiver trade deadline arrives at the end of the month, and Duquette expects to pull off at least one deal. His primary focus is finding a starter or reliever.
"Our pitching we're looking to upgrade for sure," he said.
Duquette said he'll also consider acquiring another hitter, but he added, "Pitching is usually what wins when you get into the playoffs."
Infielder Everth Cabrera remains on the free-agent market after the Orioles released him on June 13. The club doesn't appear interested in pursuing a minor league deal to bring him back into the organization.
"We're set," Duquette said.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Manny Machado last night became the third player this season to lead off the top or bottom of the first inning with a home run on his birthday, joining former teammate Alejandro De Aza (April 11) and Brandon Phillips (June 28). No one did it in the previous 12 seasons.
Machado is the youngest Orioles player to hit a home run on his birthday since Cal Ripken Jr., who delivered a game-tying shot in the 10th inning against the Blue Jays on the day he turned 23 in 1983.
You know the rest of the story. The Orioles won the World Series and Ripken was named the American League's Most Valuable Player.
Just saying ...
Machado and Chris Davis are tied for eighth in the American League with 18 home runs.
Adam Jones' home run last night moved him within two of tying Hall of Famer Frank Robinson for eighth place on the Orioles' all-time list with 179.
Infielder Jimmy Paredes ranks sixth in the majors with a .404 (21-for-52) average with runners in scoring position. The Orioles lead the majors with a .301 average, but they went 0-for-8 last night and wasted a couple of late chances to take the lead and avoid extra innings.
Nolan Reimold and wife Jenny are the proud parents of daughter Charlotte Rose - 7 pounds, 7 ounces and 20 inches long. Reimold returns from paternity leave on Thursday.
Norfolk outfielder Dariel Alvarez has been chosen to participate in the Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby on Monday in Omaha. Alvarez has 12 homers this season for the Tides.
Alvarez is the first Norfolk player to participate in the Home Run Derby since Craig Brazell in 2004.
Double-A Bowie right-hander Terry Doyle has been named the Eastern League's Player of the Month for June after going 4-0 with a 1.54 ERA and 30 strikeouts in five starts covering 35 innings.
Doyle, 29, is the first Baysox player to be named Eastern League Player of the Month since outfielder Robbie Widlansky in June 2012.
Doyle is 8-1 with a 2.09 ERA and one save in 14 games (nine starts). He's walked six and struck out 67 in 77 1/3 innings. Since entering the rotation on May 17, Doyle is 6-1 with a 1.98 ERA and two complete game shutouts.
On this date in 1970, the first three Orioles reached in the bottom of the 10th inning and third baseman Brooks Robinson delivered a game-winning grand slam off Lindy McDaniel in a 6-2 win over the Yankees at Memorial Stadium. Left-hander Mike Cuellar went the distance for his 10th win.
