Each team launches homers early (Phillies win 5-4)

The Nationals jumped on the board first against Phillies starter Mark Leiter Jr. Former Phillies outfielder Howie Kendrick launched a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall to give the Nats a 1-0 lead.

The Phillies answered in the second inning with solo homers by Rhys Hoskins and Maikel Franco off Edwin Jackson for a 2-1 lead.

Update: The Phillies chased Jackson (on his birthday no less! How rude!) in the fourth. Cameron Rupp started the scoring with a RBI single. César Hernández then was credited with an infield single to score another run. Sammy Solís replaced Jackson. With the bases loaded, Solís walked Hoskins to bring in another run.

Mid-fourth, the Phillies led the Nats 5-1.

Update II: Michael A. Taylor to the rescue again. He smacked a two-run shot off Leiter in the bottom of the fourth to get the Nats back in the game. He now has 16 homers on the season.

After five, the Phillies led the Nats 5-3.

Update III: Jackson finished 3 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

It's been a particular tough night for Trea Turner. So far the Nats lead off hitter is 0-for-3 with three strikeouts. The Nats have struck out eight times and grounded into a double play.

After five innings, the Phillies led the Nats 5-3.

Update IV: The Nats chipped away again in the sixth. Kendrick and Daniel Murphy led off with singles. Later with two outs, Taylor added a run-scoring single, his third RBI of the game.

After six innings, the Phillies led the Nats 5-4.

The Nats struck out 13 times through eight innings.

Update V: Right-hander Héctor Neris arrived to pitch the bottom of the ninth. Taylor walked. Pinch-hitter Wilmer Difo grounded out to first base, Taylor moved up to second base. Raudy Read struck out looking. Pinch-hitter Victor Robles grounded out to short to end the game.

The Nats' five-game win streak is over.

Final score: Phillies 5, Nats 4.
