Eyre on the homer he gave up and Jones on the Toronto series
Orioles reliever Willie Eyre gave up the two-run homer to Brett Lawrie that broke a 6-6 tie in the eighth inning today and lifted Toronto to an 8-6 win over the Orioles.
Eyre said it was a pitch that hit its intended spot, but still went out of the ballpark.
"I went back and looked at it (on video). We were going inside and he just got to it. I got him in there a couple of nights ago," he said. "They came out swinging. They definitely weren't scared of us. Maybe we need to push some people off the plate better. In the American League East, you have to come to play and I didn't do that today." Orioles starting pitchers had gone 6-2 with an ERA of 3.09 over an eight-start stretch, but the last two games Jo-Jo Reyes and Tommy Hunter gave up a combined 17 hits and 13 runs over 8 2/3 innings. Adam Jones talked about the Orioles' inconsistent play. They have followed up a six-game win streak by now losing four of their last five games. "We come out here and play every day. The season goes up and down with win streaks and losing streaks. We come in every day and give it all we've got and sometimes it is not enough," Jones said. He refused to blame Hunter for giving up early runs and putting the team in a hole in the early innings. "You can only do what you can control," Jones said. "All I can do is play center field. It's a team, you can't blame anything on one player or one thing. We win and lose as a team." He had praise for a Toronto offense that put up 17 extra-base hits the last two games and scored 26 runs on 42 hits in this series. "It was a helluva three games from them. I was running left and right for balls," Jones said. "We've had streaks like that where we've swung the bats really well. They have confidence and faith in the guy behind them." Vlad Guerrero went 3-for-4 with a season-high four RBIs. When batting fifth in the order, as he was today, he is 12-for-28 with two doubles, two homers and 11 RBIs. Guerrero now has 2,555 hits and that is tied for 86th all-time. Guerrero and Matt Wieters hit back-to-back homers in the fourth inning and it's the fourth time the Orioles have hit consecutive homers this season. Wieters has five homers over his last nine games and is batting .352 against lefty pitchers this year and that is fourth best in the AL.
