Late rally fizzles in 10-8 loss to Orioles, Nats' fourth straight

The Orioles continued their mastery of the Nationals with a 10-8 win at Nats Park before a sellout crowd of 39,100.

Baltimore has defeated the Nationals in 17 of 23 meetings dating to 2011. With the win, the Orioles have now won the season series from the Nationals for five straight seasons. The Nationals have lost four straight games.

Right-hander Tanner Roark could not find the strike zone consistently in the first innings. The Orioles tallied four runs, highlighted by a two-run homer from Manny Machado and RBIs from Jonathan Schoop and Matt Wieters.

The lowest point came when the Orioles had the bases loaded and Roark hit Wieters with a pitch, forcing in Chris Davis from third.

In the inning, Roark allowed three hits, hit two batters and walked one.

The Nationals looked to have a big inning reply in the bottom of the first. Trea Turner singled - the first of his four hits - and Jayson Werth was hit by pitch. But with one out, Bryce Harper struck out looking.

Anthony Rendon doubled to score Turner, but Daniel Murphy was thrown out at the plate attempting to score from first.

Danny Espinosa crushed a solo homer off of Wade Miley in the fifth. Murphy added an RBI single in the seventh. But Ryan Zimmerman and Harper struck out with two men on and two outs in consecutive innings, denying the Nats an opportunity to rally.

Roark lasted only five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) and seven hits, with three walks and four strikeouts. He threw 111 pitches, 59 for strikes.

The Orioles poured salt in the wound with five runs in the eighth. Wieters hit a three-run homer over the center field wall to finish the scoring.

But the Nationals made the Orioles sweat in the ninth. Murphy hit his first career grand slam off Parker Bridwell with one out to cut the Birds' lead to 10-7.

Zach Britton was summoned and Harper singled to left. Rendon then doubled off the right-center field wall to score Harper and the Nats were within two runs. Wilson Ramos slapped a comebacker to Britton, who tried to get Rendon off second. But Rendon was called safe, leaving runners at first and second.

Zimmerman grounded into a 4-6-3 double play on the first pitch he saw from Britton to end the game.
