It was Mother's Day, but this whole weekend was a bit of a family affair for the Orioles' Manny Machado. He had family in the stands and was playing against his brother-in-law, Oakland's Yonder Alonso.
Today, Machado put on a show for his family and his many Orioles fans. He homered twice, hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high six runs in the Orioles' 11-3 win over Oakland.
"It's a special day," Machado said. "We are glad to have our families here. I had my mom in the stands and my in-laws here. We came out with the win, we both played well today and it was just a special day overall."
Machado began this year with a career high of four RBIs in a single game. He topped that with five on April 28 against the White Sox and topped that again today when he hit his third career grand slam. It was part of the Orioles' season-high six-homer day.
"It's about time that we got into a nice little groove," he said. "We'd been struggling for a few days and the bats came alive. The sun came out, which was great. We went out and put some good swings on some good pitches.
"It's a great day. (I was) able to put good some good swings and hit a couple of homers. It's an overall great game, but I have to take it in and put it behind me. Come out tomorrow against a new pitcher and put more good swings on some balls.
"It was awesome to see the sun. We had a great turnout today. All the fans came out and supported us. I think that is what pumped us up a little bit. Between the fans and the sun, it was a beautiful day today."
Machado was the AL Player of the Month for April and is not slowing down in May, or at Camden Yards. In 18 home games, he is batting .425 with 11 doubles, seven homers, 15 runs, 19 RBIs, an .863 slugging percentage and an OPS of 1.338.
Those are amazing stats and he's just been very good and very consistent from opening day on, home or away.
"You know, it's just being a little smarter," Machado said. "Going up there and looking for pitches I can do damage to. Looking for pitches I can drive. Sometimes they pitch around me and you have to take the walk. You have to know who is behind you.
"This team is so stacked up that they are not going to always want to pitch to one certain guy. You just have to be smarter at the plate. It's been fun. We've been playing well and I just want to keep hitting the ball, play some defense and get some more wins."
In 30 games for the season, Machado is batting .350 with 15 doubles, nine homers, 22 RBIs, slugging .691 and with an OPS of 1.094. He said today's power display was great, but the team has to produce wins when they don't hit the longball also.
"The homers are not always going to be there. The other night we won on a sac fly in the tenth. It wasn't a home run. As long as the pitchers give us a chance and we maintain as a team doing the right things, getting guys over and getting out of innings, things will turn out great," he said.
MORE CLUBHOUSE QUOTES
Mark Trumbo on playing with both Mike Trout and Manny Machado: "They wow you, each and every day. Just when you think that they've done enough for that game, they do something crazy like hit a grand slam or make a play in the field. The sky is the limit for these type of players. Manny is obviously a huge contributor for us."
Trumbo on the O's lineup: "We have power up and down the lineup. (Jonathan) Schoopy's homer and Joey (Rickard) getting one out of here today. It was just a nice showing for just about everybody."
Trumbo on a big crowd: "That is what you look forward to. That was a blast today. That helped us to get that win. The energy was there and that helps you as a player. We really appreciate it."
Chris Tillman on giving up three in the first and then no other runs: "It was a grind early. I made some pitches that I wanted to make. They are a good team. They don't swing and miss too much. We had to make some adjustments to get through that game. The offense got us right back in the game, they picked me up huge and our defense was pretty special that whole game all the way around. A lot of hard-hit balls off me that we made a lot of really good plays on."
Tillman on the homer barrage: "I had a rough first inning and I think the boys had us back on top by the third. As a starting pitcher, that means everything in the world. It was fun to watch."
