Mullins denied starting spot in All-Star Game (updated)

The two phases of fan voting for the July 13 All-Star Game are done and the starters revealed.

Where does this leave Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins?

On the outside for now, waiting to find out whether he's a reserve for the American League.

Mullins didn't finish in the top three voting among outfielders. The Angels' Mike Trout is first, followed by the Yankees' Aaron Judge and the Blue Jays' Teoscar Hernández.

The Twins' Byron Buxton was fourth and the Astros' Michael Brantley was fifth.

Trout was moved to the 60-day injured list on Monday with a strained right calf and won't return until after the break. A starter replacement is pending, which opens the door for Mullins, who's certain to be on the team.

ESPN's Tim Kurkjian named Mullins as the outfielder who should have been voted in and speculated that he'll get the start in center field.

Buxton returned to the injured list after fracturing his left hand, damage done by a 94 mph fastball from Reds starter Tyler Mahle. Buxton already had missed 40 games with a Grade 2 hip strain. But he also placed ahead of Mullins in the voting.

The pitchers and reserves will be announced Sunday at 5:30 p.m. on ESPN. Every team must have a representative.

He leads the AL with 99 hits and his OBP, slugging, OPS and stolen bases rank first among outfielders. He's tied with Brantley for most doubles.

Fangraphs.com assigned Mullins a 3.7 WAR that tied for third in the majors.

The All-Star Game will be played at Coors Field in Denver. Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini will participate in the Home Run Derby, to be held the previous night.

* The Orioles have signed pitcher Gregori Vasquez, 23, from the independent Kansas City Monarchs roster, with his former team sending out a release and a source confirming it.

Vasquez is a right-hander from San Cristobal, Dominican Republic, who was in the Indians' organization from 2015-2019 and peaked in high Single-A ball. He didn't pitch in 2020 and joined the Gary SouthShore RailCats and Monarchs of the American Association earlier this year after the Indians released him in February.

Vasquez was 18-14 with a 3.36 ERA and 1.152 WHIP in 79 games (52 starts) in the minors and averaged 0.7 home runs allowed per nine innings. He had a combined 4.33 ERA and 1.189 WHIP in seven starts this year covering 35 1/3 innings.

The Orioles are expected to send Vasquez to Single-A Delmarva after he goes through the intake process.
