Nats net seven international players (Nats win 3-2)

The Nationals announced the signing of seven international free agents today, including top-20 international prospect right-handed pitcher Andry Lara from Coro, Venezuela.

The 6-foot-4, 180-pound Lara is 16 years old and was signed by Ronald Morillo, reportedly for a $1.25 million signing bonus. Lara is rated as the No. 16 international free agent by MLB Pipeline.

The other two Venezuelan signees: left-hander Franklin Marquez and outfielder Roismar Quintana.

Most teams had around $5,398,000 to spend on international free agents. Players eligible had to be born between Sept. 1, 2002 and Aug. 31, 2003 and be registered with Major League Baseball.

The Nationals had $4,321,400 to spend after signing free agent Patrick Corbin and exceeding the luxury tax threshold last season.

The announcement came from Nationals president of baseball operations and general manager Mike Rizzo and vice president of international operations Johnny DiPuglia.

Update: The game went into a rain delay at 7:59 p.m. EDT.

Juan Soto grooved a two-run shot in the first inning off Marlins starter Zac Gallen. The Marlins had greeted Patrick Corbin with three singles in a row, capped off by an RBI single from Garrett Cooper, to take a 1-0 lead.

Heading to the bottom of the third in a rain delay, the Nats lead the Marlins 2-1.

Update II: The rain has cleared. Game resumed at 9:15 p.m.

Update III: Corbin lasted seven innings, including a 76-minute rain delay, allowing one run on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. He threw 87 pitches, 56 for strikes.

Against Wander Suero, César Puello doubled to begin the eighth. Miguel Rojas, who already has three hits and a run, hit a long fly ball to left field to score Puello. The sacrifice fly RBI tied the game at 2-2.

Mid-eighth, the Nats and the Marlins are tied 2-2.

Update IV: Sean Doolittle did not allow a run in in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth against José Quijada, Yan Gomes reached base on an error by Marlins third baseman Neil Walker. With two outs, Trea Turner doubled to right-center field to score Gomes from first.

Final score: the Nats 3, the Marlins 2.
