O's add Ariel Miranda, option Tyler Wilson to Triple-A

SEATTLE - The Orioles' roster is still ever-changing, even when the Orioles have to add player from the East Coast to join them on the West Coast. Cuban-born left-hander Ariel Miranda was added to the roster today and is in the bullpen for today's game. To make roster room, right-hander Tyler Wilson was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk. To make room on the 40-man roster, pitcher Brian Duensing was transferred from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

Miranda is 3-7 with a 4.06 ERA in 15 starts at Norfolk. But over his last three starts he worked 19 scoreless innings, allowing just seven hits with four walks and 18 strikeouts.

Wilson gave up a career-high eight runs in last night's loss at Safeco Field and has allowed 13 runs over eight innings his past two starts. He has a 5.22 ERA.

"Tyler has pitched well for us but also had some struggles," manager Buck Showalter said. "This is more about the bullpen and the need to keep it rested. We've had a lot of short starts lately."

"We are going to let him take some time off. He's thrown over 100 innings counting spring training. Want to try to freshen him up some. Talked to him about targeting how much time before he pitches again and I think we'll get a good return for it. He'll be back and will help us."

Showalter said the O's don't necessarily have to fill Wilson's rotation spot before the All-Star break due to the day off coming up Thursday. Ubaldo Jimenez, pitching today, could take that spot the next time through.

Miranda talked about joining the Orioles.

"I feel so happy right now to be here," Miranda said with interpreting help from coach Einar Diez. "I thank the Orioles for giving me this opportunity and look forward to doing whatever I can to help the team."

On another note, the Orioles will lose designated hitter Pedro Alvarez after today's game. He will leave the team due to a death in his family and has to fly home to the Domincan Republic. He will probably miss the three-game series in Los Angeles and rejoin the team at home on Friday. The Orioles will replace him on the roster potentially with a position player currently on the 40-man roster like Christian Walker or Dariel Alvarez. They could also replace him with a pitcher if they choose to.

"We've got some people moving toward Los Angeles," Showalter said. "We'll wait to see if we need a pitcher or postion player (to replace Alvarez)."
