Paredes' uncertainty and Wednesday's starter (O's up 7-3)

There isn't much news to report from this morning's clubhouse access and media session with manager Buck Showalter.

The Jimmy Paredes updates have grown tiresome because there's no advancement. He's on an injury rehab assignment at Double-A Bowie that runs through May 15. The Orioles don't have a logical spot for him on a 25-man roster that includes Hyun Soo Kim and Pedro Alvarez.

Paredes is available if there's a team that matches up. In the meantime, he's 8-for-32 with Bowie, including two doubles, four RBIs and 10 strikeouts.

"I know there was some thought about having him go to Norfolk, but they took Corban (Joseph) up there and (Garabez) Rosa," Showalter said.

"Nothing new. Just kind of proceeding down that path. Trying to get his at-bats."

Showalter said if there was "pressing need right away for what he can bring," the Orioles would summon him. That's clearly not the case.

"It's also how you make room for him. It's all the factors, to be frank with you," Showalter said.

"You'd like to see him get as many at-bats as he can before there's a need, and then how do you get him here and what does he do when he gets here? And that's just the frank part of it. There's about three factors there. But we know come the 15th we're going to have to do something."

"We'd like to keep him, but there's some other factors involved there that I think will be revealed to us at a later date."

Paredes remains challenged to play the outfield, though it's not from a lack of effort. He works hard at it.

"He's shown the same skills that he had before. Nothing's regressed," Showalter said.

"I know the narrative last night is he played a good right field, handled all his chances. It looks like he's adapted well to outfield and probably is a better option there, even though he has experience in the infield."

The Orioles need a starter for Wednesday afternoon in Minnesota after using Mike Wright and Ubaldo Jimenez for yesterday's doubleheader. The club is listing Tyler Wilson, Kevin Gausman and TBA. The Twins are starting Jose Berrios, Phil Hughes and Ricky Nolasco.

Vance Worley is a logical candidate for Wednesday because he's stretched out, fresh and has made two starts among his six appearances this year. But what if he's needed in long relief beforehand?

"Who else?" Showalter asked.

"A lot depends on what happens Monday and Tuesday, and today for that matter. All things are in play, and I mean all."

There isn't a candidate in the minors who rises above the rest. The idea of using Jimenez on short rest for the first time in his career after throwing 104 pitches last night will be kicked around and likely discarded.

I tossed out Tim Lincecum's name after the Orioles scouted him Friday in Arizona.

"I don't know if that's that far," Showalter said.

The Orioles expect Lincecum to sign elsewhere, but they're monitoring the situation.

Fans keep asking me about Dylan Bundy and I keep explaining that he hasn't gone more than 2 1/3 innings and thrown more than 43 pitches this season.

J.J. Hardy will stay in Baltimore while the Orioles are in Minnesota and continue to work out and rehab his left foot. Yovani Gallardo will accompany the team to Target Field and continue his cuff exercises while recovering from right shoulder tendinitis.

"We're hoping that we get off this trip, sometime during the homestand he'll start throwing," Showalter said. "We're hoping. It depends on whether he can get to a certain level of strength.

"You can tell he had some weakness that needed to be taken care of there before he could start throwing, and that's been good. That's why I feel encouraged about the program. He's made strides with it.

"Richie (Bancells) has gotten a great return with it with different guys, (Kevin) Gausman the latest. If you don't rush him. We're trying not to rush Richie. He's really good. Just let him do his thing. He did a great job with (Zach) Britton. I think a lot of places, Britton would have been on the disabled list."

The Orioles are draped in pink today for Mother's Day. The bird logo, numbers, T-shirts, spikes, bats.

Each player's authentic game-worn jersey and cap will be autographed and auctioned at www.orioles.com/auction, with proceeds going to the Baltimore Orioles Charitable Foundation to benefit breast cancer research and awareness.

This is Showalter's first Mother's Day since Lina Carrie Spires Showalter passed away in October and it's a daily struggle, the intensity peaking this morning, just as it did in December while watching wife Angela decorate their Christmas tree.

Showalter can't single out one memory of his mother, one way that she most influenced his life. The choices are so plentiful, and sifting through him again causes emotions to bubble to the surface.

"Is there just one you can think of with your mother?" he asked.

"I know what you're saying and I appreciate it. I've gotten all the stuff from my sisters. It's tough. It's the first I haven't had a Mother's Day with Mom, or birthday.

"I don't know, maybe just her being there. We didn't have a pot to pee in, but somehow just being there. Show up at a game or an event or something. Just grinding. She was a grinder. She had to grow up fast. A lot of things you don't find out about until later on in life, when they start talking about it."

Update: Chris Tillman allowed three runs in the top of the first, equaling his total over his last three starts covering 19 2/3 innings. Josh Reddick, Danny Valencia and Yonder Alonso had RBI singles. Valencia's came on a chopper over the mound.

Valencia was thrown out at the plate to end the inning, the putout going 7-6-2.

Update II: Joey Rickard walked to lead off the bottom of the first, moved up on Kendall Graveman's wild pitch and scored on Manny Machado's eight home run. A's 3, Orioles 2.

Update III: Pedro Alvarez and Jonathan Schoop homered in the second inning, the fourth time the Orioles have gone back-to-back this season. Orioles 4, A's 3.

Alvarez's ball landed on Eutaw St. and hit the warehouse on one bounce.

Update IV: Graveman hit Chris Davis to open the bottom of the third and Mark Trumbo homered to left field with one out to give the Orioles a 6-3 lead.

Trumbo leads the Orioles with nine home runs and 24 RBIs.

Kendall gave up a career-high four home runs today and he's done after 2 2/3 innings.

Update V: Make it five home runs for the Orioles in four innings. Rickard joined the party with one out in the fourth, his third homer of the season. Orioles 7. A's 3.
