So has Manny Machado's bat heated up because his knee is finally healthy? Is it because of any specific adjustments he has made at the plate? Is there another reason?
If there is a specific reason for Machado's current hot streak, manager Buck Showalter was not going to reveal it during his pregame press conference today.
Machado is 8-for-10 with a double, two homers and three RBIs the past two games against Washington, raising his average from .246 to .269. Over his last four games since his suspension ended he is 12-for-21.
But the skipper was not in any mood to analyze what Machado is doing right now and even knocked on wood before talking about it.
"He's actually had two or three ground balls sneak through," Showalter said. "I was talking to him about the baseball gods. I said, 'If you stay true to this thing, if you keep grinding and don't get that woe is me, sooner or later they'll let you up off the mat.'
"You get a ball that is this far out of the reach of the guy. Someone decides to score one a hit instead of an error. It's just such a fine line here. But when it gets going it's such a snowball sport. Good and bad. You are never as good as some stretches or never as bad as baseball will make you feel sometimes.
"I've told this to Chris (Davis). You have to grind through it. That is where the challenge comes is grinding though it mentally and emotionally when you have so many influences reminding you how bad the past has been," he said.
In 31 games since June 1, Machado is batting .312 (39-125) with 15 runs, eight doubles, seven home runs, seven walks and 15 RBIs. He's homered in back-to-back games for the second time this season and has hit five home runs in his last eight games.
Single-A Frederick outfielder Michael Burgess has been named the Carolina League Player of the Month for June. The award is voted on by all eight Carolina League managers.
The 25-year-old Burgess hit .371 during the month with nine homers, three triples, seven doubles and drove in 22 runs. The nine home runs were the most by a Carolina League player, and tied for the fourth-most by a minor leaguer in June. Burgess also led the league in total bases (73), extra-base hits (19) and slugging percentage (.820).
Burgess was originally a first round draft pick of the Nationals in 2007 and was signed by the Orioles as a free agent on February 20. He struggled to hit Double-A pitching, batting .259 in 2012 and .203 last year but he certainly has hit Carolina League pitchers this season.
He leads the league in RBIs (66), extra-base hits (46), doubles (27), and total bases (170). He ranks second in home runs (15) and fifth in batting average (.319).
Meanwhile, Dylan Bundy pitches for Frederick tonight at Salem. In his first Keys start after three with short-season Single-A Aberdeen, he pitched 4 2/3 and gave up four hits and three runs last Friday.
