Showalter's pregame updates on Trumbo and O'Day (game update)

CHICAGO - There were some topics to discuss today with the Orioles that didn't involve struggling slugger Chris Davis. Manager Buck Showalter provided updates on Mark Trumbo and Darren O'Day.

Trumbo developed right knee soreness after sliding into a base here on Tuesday night, when he went 4-for-4. He did not play last night. O'Day, who is 0-1 with a 3.77 ERA, has been out since May 5 with a hyperextended right elbow.

"We may get an MRI on Trumb's knee just to be on the safe side," Showalter said. "We don't expect anything. But he is similar sore today and we expected that with a quick turnaround to a day game. Our doctor in Sarasota is going to come over (tomorrow when the O's play at Tampa Bay) after his work day, so it will be late in the afternoon.

"We are leaning toward getting an injection with Darren, probably cortisone. He's had a great response to that over the years with that wrist thing and a forearm strain. It really helped that speed along. I think that has a chance to happen tomorrow, it's not set in stone."

An injection would likely mean no throwing at all for O'Day for two to three days while the shot takes effect.

Showalter was asked about the possibility that reliever Sergio Romo could start against the Orioles in one or all three games in Tampa Bay. He would throw an inning or two and then be replaced by a starting pitcher in the second or third inning. How would Showalter combat that with his lineup?

"It is something that we've talked and thought about," he said. "We've got some thoughts on it from our perspective. I'm not telling (about the lineup). I've got the theory. I've got it made out for tomorrow. I'm not telling."

Showalter made a brief comment about catcher Welington Castillo, an Oriole last year, who has been suspended 80 games for violating the league's joint drug agreement, Major League Baseball announced Thursday. Castillo is being banned for using erythropoietin, a performance-enhancing substance.

"I don't perceive to know all the facts," the skipper said. "He was a good player and good teammate and a pleasure to have around last year. That is the only thing I can comment on. He was a good player for us. I don't know all the stuff that is going on, what he is taking or what was positive."

A big early lead: A day after an 11-1 loss, the Orioles have an early 7-0 lead and knocked Sox starter Lucas Giolito out in the second inning. The right-hander's control problems continued today as he allowed seven runs in 1 1/3 innings, issued three walks and hit a batter.

In the O's first, Pedro Álvarez and Craig Gentry drew bases-loaded walks. Chance Sisco added a two-run single for a 4-0 lead. In the second, Trey Mancini and Adam Jones hit back-to-back homers for the 6-0 lead. It was the third time this season the O's have gone back-to-back. Later, Sisco drew the club's third bases-loaded walk in two innings - this one from Chris Beck - for the seven-run lead.

More runs: The O's lead grew to 9-0 in the third on run-scoring singles by Manny Machado and Álvarez. Meanwhile, Dylan Bundy set down the first nine he faced today, getting six strikeouts.

Sox score: José Rondon's three-run homer to left off Bundy made the score 9-3 in the fourth. Bundy fanned two more that inning and has eight for the day.
