Still feeling discomfort, Dan Klein is scheduled to see shoulder specialist

Dan Klein, the Orioles' third-round draft pick in 2010 out of UCLA and a pitcher the team had high hopes for, will see shoulder specialist Dr. Craig Morgan on April 13. Klein had shoulder surgery last Aug. 16 and had still been experiencing some discomfort at camp at Twin Lakes Park. Klein was able to do some light throwing during camp, but when he extended the distance and velocity he began to feel the discomfort, according to a club official. Dr. Morgan is the same doctor that recently examined Matt Hobgood and, in fact, was scheduled to operate on Hobgood's right shoulder today in Wilmington, Del. If Klein does need another procedure as a result of his upcoming visit to Dr. Morgan, it would be the third on his shoulder in the last few years. He had arthroscopic surgery and took a redshirt year at UCLA in 2009 and then there was the procedure of last August to repair a tear in his right labrum and loosen his shoulder capsule. Between Single-A Frederick and Double-A Bowie last season, Klein went 3-1 with an impressive ERA of 1.11. Over 32 1/3 innings, he allowed 23 hits and issued just six walks with 37 strikeouts. Opposing batters hit just .197. He appeared to be on a fast track and was scheduled to be promoted to Triple-A last year and maybe later to the majors before he was shut down then. He is 4-1 with an ERA of 0.93 in 21 games in the O's minors starting in 2010 at short-season Single-A Aberdeen. Hobgood update: Matt Hobgood said his surgery today went well. He posted this via his Twitter account: Surgery went great! Praise God! Dr said the rotator cuff was pristine, nothing wrong with it at all. Just tightened the shoulder capsule up. Thanks again to EVERYONE who prayed that surgery went well! I can't thank you guys enough. I will do everything I can to come back stronger. In a recent interview, Hobgood talked about the timetable for his return to pitching by next year: "He told me I would be able to do some small exercises the week after (surgery). I'll get the stitches taken out the week after surgery and then go straight into rehab. I'll be in a sling for four weeks. I won't pick up a ball for at least four months. I'll probably start playing catch six months after surgery if everything with rehab goes well. He said I should be ready to go by next March and should make a full recovery. Others say he is the best in the country," he said of Dr. Morgan, who performed today's procedure in Wilmington, Delaware.
