Strop with another scoreless inning, Davis homers in 13-3 win (rotation update)

Orioles manager Buck Showalter found another safe spot for reliever Pedro Strop today, inserting him into the eighth inning with a six-run lead. Strop responded by retiring all three Tigers he faced, striking out two, and watched the Orioles extend their lead to 13-3. The Orioles tacked on four more runs against Jose Valverde in the top of the ninth on Adam Jones' two-run double that followed singles by Manny Machado and Nick Markakis, and a long two-run homer by Chris Davis that may have landed on Eutaw Street. Eleven runs were a season-high for the Orioles, but they got greedy. They added 17 hits for good measure. Machado has 31 multi-hit games, most in the majors. Davis has two homers today to give him 26 on the season, also most in the majors. He has five multi-homer games in his career. Davis is batting .337 with 26 homers and 66 RBIs. At last count, he had received the second-highest vote total in the American League for the All-Star Game at Citi Field in New York. In his last two appearances since the debacle against the Angels at Camden Yards, Strop has allowed one hit, walked none and struck out four in two scoreless innings. The Orioles had lost the last eight games that Strop appeared in, and 13 of the last 15. He did not get each decision, in case you were wondering. The Orioles are on the verge of moving 11 games above .500 for the first time this season and improving their series record to 16-6-2. Update: Freddy Garcia pitched the ninth in mop-up duty - and yes, someone will need to mop up around him - in a 13-3 win. Assuming he starts start Sunday in Toronto, today was the equivalent of a side session. T.J. McFarland didn't allow a run of his own in two innings before Strop replaced him. In his last eight games against Detroit dating back to Aug. 18, 2012, Davis is 13-for-33 with two doubles, six homers, 12 RBIs and eight runs scored. Update II: Showalter told reporters that Jason Hammel will start Friday night in Toronto and Miguel Gonzalez will start Saturday. Sunday is TBA. Showalter mentioned Garcia and Zach Britton as candidates.
