The Orioles can't hold late lead as Seattle comes back to win

The Orioles had just three hits tonight, but for a while it looked like they had enough runs to get a win in Seattle. Then the Mariners took advantage of a late O's miscue on defense to score five runs over their last two innings and beat the Orioles 6-3. Chris Davis hit his second homer in the last three games, a three-run shot in the fourth, and that gave the O's a 3-1 edge, which held up until the bottom of the seventh. With a man on first and none out in the seventh, Chone Figgins struck out. Dustin Ackley was running on the pitch and Matt Wieters threw to second. It looked like a strike out, throw out double play, but Robert Andino dropped the throw at the bag and Seattle had life instead of having two outs and no one on. Later in the inning, they took advantage of getting the extra out when Casper Wells ripped a bases-loaded double off Jason Hammel to put the Mariners ahead 4-3. An inning later, Miguel Olivo and Dustin Ackley hit back-to-back homers off Troy Patton to expand the M's lead to 6-3. The Orioles could not score again and came up with a disheartening loss in a game they led with nine outs to go to start a seven-game road trip. The Mariners had scored just nine runs over their last eight games but came up with five big runs late tonight to win this series opener. Hammel, the losing pitcher, allowed four runs and seven hits over 6 2/3 innings to fall to 8-4 with a 3.43 ERA. The Orioles missed a chance to gain a game on the first-place Yankees who lost to Tampa Bay. The Orioles have now lost six of the last seven and are 3-10 over their last 13 games to fall to 42-37 on the year. Some postgame notes: * The Orioles have now lost six of their last seven games and have been outscored 58-25 in that stretch. * Davis had two of the Orioles three hits and the rest of the lineup went 1-for-25 with a single. The Orioles did not have a hit after the Davis homer in the fourth. * Davis' home run was the Orioles 100th on the year. * Wilson Betemit went 0-for-4 to snap his 11-game hitting streak. During the streak he went 17-for-36 (.472) with two homers and five RBIs. * Brian Roberts, who has just one hit over his past 25 at-bats, missed the game with a groin injury. * The Orioles have allowed six runs or more in seven consecutive games. The Orioles have given up 15 homers over the past seven games.
