The Orioles were hoping that 2010 minor league Player of the Year Joe Mahoney could return to the Double-A Bowie Baysox by Sunday, but that is now very unlikely.
Mahoney, who has been on the disabled list twice this year with a quad injury and has had just 34 at-bats with Bowie, has suffered a setback at extended spring training. The Orioles were hoping he could get into an extended spring training game Tuesday, but Mahoney is now out with a tight hamstring.
Right now, that is a day-to-day injury and Mahoney will get into game action in Sarasota, Fla., when this injury, which is different from the quad, gets better. He was hitting .235 through 10 Bowie games and has not played since May 3.
Single-A Delmarva's Manny Machado is expected to play in his first game in extended spring Thursday. The Orioles are not sure how many games he will need to play there before they can get him back to the Shorebirds.
Chris Tillman is expected to make his first start for Triple-A Norfolk tonight when the Tides play at Pawtucket. Brad Bergesen is expected to make his first outing since going back to Norfolk on Friday night.
Single-A Frederick outfielder Trent Mummey, who has been out since suffering a concussion May 4, has played a few games at extended spring as they hope he can return soon to Frederick. He had seven at-bats yesterday in Sarasota.
Right-handed pitcher Ryan Berry, who has been out all year due shoulder tendinitis, continues to progress with his throwing program. The Orioles are hopeful he will get into some games in the Gulf Coast League at some point when the games begin there late this month.
