Wang notches first win with Nationals; Morse and Gomes homer, 3-1 over Cubs

This was the night that Chien-Ming Wang dreamed about during those long hours rehabbing his surgically repaired shoulder. Wang (1-2) notched his first major league win since June 28, 2009, and his first as a Washington National, going six innings, allowing just one hit and no runs. The Nationals scored all their runs in the sixth frame and defeated the Chicago Cubs, 3-1 at Wrigley Field.

Wang no-hit the Cubs through five innings, befuddling them with his patented sinker. Chicago only had two runners reach second base in six innings. Wang finished with 81 pitches, 53 for strikes. He struck out one, walked two and hit one batter. In his first two starts with the Nationals, Wang had trouble getting hitters out in the first inning. On this night, Wang went 1-2-3 in the opening frame, and did not allow a base runner until Marlon Byrd was hit by pitch with one away in the second. Cubs' starter Matt Garza (5-9) was equal to the task, scattering three hits through five innings, and striking out eight Nationals' hitters. But in the sixth, the Nationals' bats got a hold of Garza. With one out, Michael Morse blasted a solo homer over the center field wall for a 1-0 lead. Following a Jayson Werth single, Jonny Gomes slammed a two-run shot to left-center and the Nationals' lead was 3-0. Morse now has 20 homers on the season. Pinch-hitter Tony Campana had the first hit for the Cubs in the bottom of the sixth. Starlin Castro's solo home run off of Tyler Clippard got the Cubs on the board in the eighth, but the Nationals still led 3-1. Drew Storen came on in the ninth and notched his 30th save. The Nationals allowed just three hits. The Nationals are now 4-1 against the Cubs this season and 3-2 on this road trip.
