Zimmerman moves up and hits it out (D-backs win 4-3 in 10 innings)

The Nationals finally solved left-hander Patrick Corbin and the answer came from Ryan Zimmerman.

Ryan-Zimmerman-running-white-sidebar.jpgMoved up to the No. 2 spot in the order, Zimmerman crushed a Corbin four-seam fastball with a man on base in his second at-bat.

David Peralta quickly answered as well in the top of the fourth with a solo shot down the left field line off of Nationals starter Jeremy Hellickson.

Arizona got two more men on in that inning thanks to a single by Daniel Descalso and a walk to Christian Walker. But Hellickson induced a Ketel Marte grounder to second base to end the threat.

Before the game, manager Davey Martinez flipped Zimmerman to the No. 2 hole and placed Howie Kendrick in the clean-up spot. Ironically, in the bottom of the third when Zimmerman hit his two-run shot, he was the fourth man up in the frame.

Mid-fourth, the Nats leads the D-backs 2-1.

Update: Peralta solved Hellickson again with a solo blast to lead off the sixth, his second homer of the game. Hellickson recorded one more out and then was pulled. Hellickson lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with one walks and one strikeout. He pitched an efficient 57 times, 43 for strikes. Trevor Gott registered the final two outs of the inning.

Mid-sixth, the games is even, 2-2.

Update II: Now, the hitter Martinez placed in the No. 4 spot pays dividends. Kendrick launched a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth off of Corbin. His fourth homer of the season came on a 2-2 pitch.

After six innings, the Nats lead the D-backs 3-2.

Update III: The D-backs put together three key singles in the eighth to score the game-tying run against Ryan Madson. A.J. Pollock's single to left scored Nick Ahmed to tie the game at 3-3.

After eight, the Nats and the D-backs even at 3-3.

Update IV: In the bottom of the ninth against D-backs reliever Yoshihisa Hirano, pinch-hitter Matt Adams grounded out back to the pitcher. Adrian Sanchez struck out. Pedro Severino lined out to center field.

The game now goes into extra innings. Sammy Solís pitching for the Nats with the game tied at 3-3.

Update V: The Nats bullpen struggled to throw strikes in the 10th inning. An Ahmed double was followed by a strikeout, but then three walks in a row. Austin L. Adams walked Pollock to allow Ahmed to score.

Mid-10th and the D-backs lead the Nats 4-3.

Update VI: Brad Boxberger pitched the bottom of the 10th. Matt Wieters grounded out to first base. Turner struck out. Zimmerman doubled to left field. Harper intentionally walked. Rafael Bautista took over for Zimmerman as a pinch-runner at second. Kendrick also walked. The bases loaded for Michael A. Taylor, but he grounded out on the first pitch to shortstop. The fielder's choice at second base ended the game.

Final score: D-backs 4, Nats 3, in 10 innings.

The Nats are 11-16 overall and 3-9 at home. They fall to a 1-3 record in home series this season.
