ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Well, it was fun while it lasted.
B.J. Upton singled to center field off Orioles reliever Jeremy Accardo with two outs in the seventh inning to break up the collective no-hit bid.
I could have sworn I ordered the combination no-hit platter tonight.
It was a clean single, and it came after Brian Roberts made a nice backhanded stop and off-balance throw to retire Dan Johnson.
Upton stole second despite a pitch-out, with catcher Matt Wieters bobbling the ball and making a late throw. Accardo walked Matt Joyce intentionally, and Kelly Shoppach followed with a single into left field. Felix Pie, who pinch-ran for Luke Scott in the top half of the inning, made a perfect throw to cut down Upton. And naturally, Wieters blocked the plate.
Pie pumped his fist as he ran off the field. We're still scoreless.
Michael Gonzalez is warming up in the visiting bullpen.
Update: Brian Roberts just crushed a pitch from Rays reliever Jake McGee for a three-run homer in the eighth inning. We're no longer scoreless.
