A pair of left-handers battle in Philly (Phillies win 4-3)

A pair of southpaws doing battle tonight in Philadelphia. Cole Hamels was off to smooth start with two quick outs in the first. Against Anthony Rendon, a grounder to third base was fielded by Andres Blanco, who threw to first for the out. But first base umpire Gary Cederstrom ruled that first baseman Darin Ruf drifted off the bag and called Rendon safe. Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg requested a video review. The video replay in New York overturned the call and Rendon was out. Nationals left-hander Gio Gonzalez walked a batter in the bottom of the first, but nothing else. There's no score through 1 1/2 innings in Philadelphia. Update: The Phillies got on the board against Gonzalez in the fifth. Grady Sizemore tripled to lead off the inning. Freddy Galvis launched a two-run shot to left field and the Phillies lead 2-0. Update II: Hamels is flying while Gonzalez allowed another longball. Darin Ruf crushed his third of the season, a solo shot in the sixth, and the Phillies lead 3-0. Update III: Great counter punch by the Nationals in the seventh. With the bases loaded and one out, Wilson Ramos laced a single to right to score Rendon and cut the Phillies' lead to 3-1. Kevin Frandsen followed with a base hit to right as well, scoring Ian Desmond, and the Phillies' lead is down to 3-2. Update IV: Asdrubal Cabreraled off the eighth with solo homer to end Hamels' night, tying the game at 3-3. It was Cabrera's third homer with the Nationals and 12th of season. Gonzalez finished six innings, allowing six hits, three runs, all earned, two homers and one walk with four strikeouts. He tossed 87 pitches, 62 for strikes. Update V: The Phillies scored a run in the eighth. Desmond's throwing error allowed Ben Revere to be safe at first. Originally, first base umpire Cederstrom said that Kevin Frandsen had caught the ball on the bag. But video review of the play revealed Desmond's throw was high and drew Frandsen off the bag. Revere stole second and went to third on a fly out with only one out. Carlos Ruiz's sacrifice fly scored Revere and the Phillies led 4-3. Jonathan Papelbon got a 1-2-3 ninth, which included getting pinch-hitters Bryce Harper to strike out looking and Adam LaRoche to fly out to left. The Phillies won 4-3 and take the series. It is the Nats' first series loss since Aug. 10.
