A total team effort leads to another series win

I'm back from the "Nats Xtra" set after quite a fun day of TV work. The members of the crew all were great liars and told me I did a nice job. Dating to last season, the Nationals have now won seven in a row and 11 of their last 13 against the Phillies after today's 7-1 victory. Through the first two games in this series, they out-hit Philadelphia 29-11 and already locked up their eighth series win of the young season with a chance to earn a sweep of their division rivals tomorrow. Yeah, it's been a decent last couple days. Manager Davey Johnson has to be absolutely thrilled with the performance from his group today. Starter Gio Gonzalez delivered another fantastic outing, allowing just one run over seven strong innings, striking out seven and walking just one. The outing itself was huge, as was the fact that Gonzalez was able to work so deep into the game, saving a bullpen which was forced to throw a combined five innings from five pitchers in yesterday's 11-inning win. The bats came out in full force today, as well, as the Nats smacked 15 hits and three homers. Jayson Werth's three-run blast in the fifth was key and got Washington out in front, and the insurance runs followed shortly thereafter. A solo shot from Ian Desmond in the sixth and a two-run homer off the bat of Chad Tracy in the seventh really put the game away. As I was walking out on the concourse on my way to take part in the postgame show, I heard a fan yell to no one in particular: "Bring your brooms tomorrow!" That would be quite a statement, all right.
