Adam Jones wins Marvin Miller Man of the Year award (with quote)

Orioles center fielder Adam Jones was recognized tonight for his work away from Camden Yards instead of his production at the plate and in the field.

Jones has been named recipient of the Marvin Miller Man of the Year award, given annually to the player "who inspires others through his on-field performances and contributions to his community." Jones finished ahead of Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon and White Sox reliever David Robertson in voting by his peers.

Jones is the only Orioles representative in the Players Choice Awards, which are airing tonight on MLB Network.

The Players Choice Awards program benefits the Major League Baseball Players Trust, the charitable foundation created and run by the players themselves. Winners in every category will designate charities to receive grants totaling $260,000 from the Players Trust.

Jones will receive a $50,000 grant to donate to his charity. He chose the Boys and Girls Club of San Diego, a chance to give back to his hometown.

"An award like this is something, you don't go out and try to win these kinds of awards," Jones said on MLB Network. "Obviously, you want to win on the field and between the lines, but this shows that we're human outside the game and we try to impact where we can."

The five-time All-Star has immersed himself in the community since coming to Baltimore, his involvement extending to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Baltimore, the YMCA of Central Maryland, the Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities (RBI) program, the Cool Kids Foundation, the Jackie Robinson Foundation and OriolesREACH. Jones also serves as a member of the Baseball Assistance Team (BAT) Board of Directors.

Earlier this year, Jones co-hosted a clinic for inner-city youth in West Baltimore following the riots.

Jones also is holding his third annual #StayHungry Purple Tailgate before the Ravens-Seahawks game on Dec. 13 at M&T Bank Stadium. The tailgate runs from 4 p.m.-7:30 p.m. on 700 W. Ostend St.

The event has raised more than $20,000 in two years for the Boys and Girls Club.

Two weeks ago, Jones received the Governor's Service Award for outstanding volunteer service in Maryland communities. He'll be honored tonight with the 2015 Brooks Robinson Community Service Award at the 16th annual Legends for Youth Dinner in New York.

The award is presented annually to a current or former major league player.

The recipient's community service "exemplifies the unselfish and humble attitude of Brooks Robinson, bettering the lives of the youth in his community." The award is given in honor of the dedication Robinson has shown to young people across the country through his support of the Legends for Youth Clinic series and the MLBPAA since its inception in 1982.
