A few early notes from Camden Yards

Orioles manager Buck Showalter hasn't set his rotation for the Diamondbacks series that begins Friday night at Camden Yards and concludes the last homestand of the 2016 season.

Showalter and pitching coach Dave Wallace are gathering more information before getting "closure."

Wade Miley will leave the team after Sunday's game and go on paternity leave. Showalter doesn't know whether the left-hander will pitch this weekend.

Miley is supposed to throw again today. He told me this afternoon that his back "feels great" after he left Sunday's start prior to the top of the fifth inning.

Miley said he woke up the next morning feeling "much better" and he assumes that the issue was nothing more serious than cramps in his upper back. He's never dealt with this type of situation before Sunday.

Rule 5 outfielder Joey Rickard remains shut down in Sarasota after attempting to take a couple of swings on Thursday and experiencing discomfort in his right hand. He remains on the 60-day disabled list.

Showalter said "not much has changed there" but added that the discomfort is "completely away" from the injury site. Rickard had the hand immobilized after being diagnosed with a slight tear in a ligament in his thumb.

Showalter is eager to check out Trey Mancini, making his major league debut tonight. He doesn't want Mancini to get "too far away" from competitive at-bats.

Mancini also could provide a spark to an offense that's scored two runs in each of the last three games and tallied two runs or fewer in four of the last six games and five of eight.

The Dodgers designated former Orioles pitcher Bud Norris for assignment to create room on their 40-man roster.

The Orioles inquired about his availability during the non-waiver trade deadline.
