AFL review: Braymer earns win, Kieboom debuts at second

Arizona Fall League
Week in Review
Week 1
Oct. 9-15
Salt River Rafters (2-2)
Second place, East Division

Left-hander Ben Braymer (1-0) got the AFL season off to a good start with a win as Salt River defeated Surprise 10-8. He recorded four outs, allowing one unearned run on one hit with one walk and one strikeout.

Left-hander Taylor Guilbeau then came in and notched three outs, including one strikeout. He allowed no runs, no walks and no hits.

Shortstop Carter Kieboom went 0-for-3, but drew a walk and scored a run.

On Oct. 10, Salt River fell to Surprise 11-9. Starting right-hander Luis Reyes surrendered seven runs in 1 2/3 innings. He did log 57 pitches, 34 for strikes.

Catcher Tres Barrera went 0-for-4 with a run and two strikeouts. He was hit by a pitch. Surprise also stole four bases. Left-hander Jordan Mills allowed one run over two innings on two hits.

Arizona-Fall-League_Nov2010.gifOn Oct. 11, Salt River bounced back to beat Scottsdale 7-6 in 11. Kieboom played second base and went 2-for-6 with a triple and a run scored. He struck out twice. He batted second in the order. It is the first time I have seen Kieboom listed as playing second base. This is significant because of the Nats' current needs at the position.

Daniel Johnson led off and played center field, going 1-for-5 with a walk and two strikeouts. He stole a base.

In the 11th, Bryson Brigman started at second base. Johnson walked. Kieboom's flyout moved the runners into scoring position. Former Nats outfielder Willie Harris, now the Scottsdale manager, was ejected by home plate umpire Nestor Ceja. A fielder's choice brought Brigman home.

On Oct. 12, Scottsdale returned the favor with a 6-2 win. Kieboom was back at shortstop and went 0-for-2 with two walks, a strikeout and a run scored. He committed one throwing error. Guilbeau pitched again and allowed a solo homer, struck out one and walked one.

There were no games Saturday or Sunday. The Bowman hitting challenge was cancelled due to inclement weather.
