Andrew Cashner headed to disabled list

The Orioles are placing Andrew Cashner on the 10-day disabled list later today with soreness in his lower back. A reliever will be added to the roster to expand the bullpen, and Cashner's replacement as Wednesday afternoon's starter will be confirmed later.

Donnie Hart and Yefry Ramirez are headed to Baltimore from Triple-A Norfolk, confirming an earlier tweet from The Virginian-Pilot's David Hall. Ramirez could start Wednesday in his major league debut or back up Miguel Castro, the in-house candidate if the right-hander isn't used tonight.

Manager Buck Showalter said Cashner thinks the turf at Rogers Centre in Toronto may have caused the spams. He could be activated in time for the series against the Nationals in D.C. that begins June 19.

The Orioles are off Thursday and Monday, which lessens the impact of Cashner's absence on the rotation.

Cashner is 2-8 with a 4.98 ERA and 1.687 WHIP in 13 starts since signing with the Orioles as a free agent.

Ramirez, 24, is 3-4 with a 4.33 ERA and 1.210 WHIP in 12 starts with Norfolk. He'd be working on normal rest Wednesday and is coming off five scoreless innings in Toledo. He's allowed three earned runs in his last three starts over 16 innings.

Jimmy Yacabonis was a consideration, but he'd be on short rest.

Hart will give the Orioles a third left-handed reliever along with Richard Bleier and closer Zach Britton, who's expected to pitch tonight in his 2018 debut.

Outfielder Colby Rasmus' rehab assignment ends June 20, but the Orioles haven't determined his return date.

Chris Davis could get three consecutive days off with left-hander Chris Sale starting Wednesday and the Orioles having an off-day Thursday.

Right fielder Mookie Betts is out of the Red Sox lineup tonight.
