The Orioles will recall Jake Arrieta from Triple-A Norfolk this afternoon to serve as an extra bullpen arm for tonight's game against the Boston Red Sox at Camden Yards. An announcement will come later today.
Arrieta will take Kevin Gausman's spot on the 25-man roster. Gausman was optioned after last night's 13-inning game, which included six relievers being used behind him.
Arrieta hasn't pitched since Sunday, so he'd be working on normal rest if needed tonight. He's 3-3 with a 5.50 ERA in seven appearances with the Tides, including six starts.
The Orioles aren't going with the hot hand. More like a fresh arm.
Arrieta's allowed 15 runs and 19 hits in his last two starts covering 10 1/3 innings. However, he provides length in the bullpen and is viewed within the organization as a potential reliever down the road for a 'pen that doesn't offer much flexibility with minor league options.
Arrieta is 1-1 with a 6.63 ERA in four starts with the Orioles. He was optioned on May 23 after the Orioles selected Gausman's contract from Double-A Bowie. He was optioned for the first time on April 22 to make room for reliever Alex Burnett.
The Orioles designated Burnett for assignment to create room on the 40-man roster for Gausman. It's baseball's circle of life.
Arrieta didn't pitch in a game the last time he was recalled, and his stay with the Orioles again could be temporary. Gausman is expected back when Miguel Gonzalez goes on paternity leave or after the rookie's 10 days expire with Norfolk.
