SARASOTA, Fla. - Brad Bergesen took the good from today's start at Ed Smith Stadium, which meant overlooking the three runs and six hits he allowed to the Red Sox. He was stretched out to three innings and 46 pitches. He got in his work.
Bergesen immediately brought up the three runs he allowed in the second inning after getting the first two outs and two quick strikes on Drew Sutton, who's double started the rally.
"Having two outs and an 0-2 count and then you give up a three-spot, that's never a good thing, but as far as right now, it's right where I want to be," he said. "It's tough to convince people of that after an outing like that, but it's really about getting our work in, getting our innings up.
"Really, what it all amounted to for me, it was just pitch selection today. I just threw it away, away, away, and finally they started looking for it, and I need to work more inside."
The Orioles tied the Red Sox, 3-3, in the bottom of the fifth on Vladimir Guerrero's two-run single off left-hander Lenny DiNardo. They loaded the bases with no outs when Matt Wieters walked, Joe Mahoney doubled and Brian Roberts walked. DiNardo entered the game and struck out Nick Markakis and Luke Scott, but Guerrero drove in his fourth and fifth runs of the spring. Mark Reynolds struck out to end the inning.
Mahoney is 2-for-2 today.
Mark Hendrickson threw two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.
Update: Michael Gonzalez had some issues with his command, but he was bringing serious heat in the seventh inning. Gonzalez's fastball was registering 95 mph on the stadium gun. He allowed an infield hit, threw a wild pitch and walked a batter, but the game is still tied 3-3.
Mahoney just reached on an infield hit and stole second base. He's 3-for-3.
Today's attendance: 8,229. That's a sellout.
Update II: Oscar Tejada's RBI single off Pedro Viola in the top of the ninth gave Boston a 4-3 lead. If we're denied extra innings, there will be no consoling me.
