ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Brad Bergesen escaped jams in the first three innings, retired 11 in a row and won his first game of the season, 6-0, over the Rays at Tropicana Field.
Bergesen retired 17 of 18 going into the bottom of the ninth. He walked leadoff hitter Ben Zobrist on four pitches, but retired the next three batters. He allowed four hits, walked one and struck out five. He threw 103 pitches, 68 for strikes.
The Orioles had lost the last nine games that Bergesen pitched, including a relief outing.
This is the first time that the Orioles have registered back-to-back complete games since July 10-11, 2003 with Sidney Ponson and Rodrigo Lopez. It's the first complete-game shutout for the Orioles since Chris Waters on Sept. 18, 2008 at Toronto. The Orioles had three complete games in 2010. This is the Orioles' third shutout win this season (also April 9 vs. Texas and April 19 vs. Minnesota). Alumni news: Former Orioles first baseman Michael Aubrey hit four home runs and drove in seven runs today in Triple-A Syracuse's 11-0 victory over Durham. He began the game without a homer this season.
