Bernadina leaves game after being hit by pickoff throw (updated)

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Nationals cannot catch a break. Already without their projected starting left fielder and center fielder, both of whom will start the season on the disabled list, the Nationals will have to play the rest of today's spring training finale without Roger Bernadina, who was expected to start in center field on opening day. Bernadina has been pulled from today's game after being hit on the leg by an errant Aaron Cook pickoff throw. The Nats outfielder jogged into second base after the ball deflected away from Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, but he was running with a clear limp. After being tended to by the training staff, Bernadina left the game and was replaced by Brett Carroll. Bernadina walked into the Nationals' clubhouse with a trainer by his side and will undergo further evaluation. The Nationals are suddenly running out of major league outfielders, although today's signing of Jason Michaels to a minor league contract sure appears quite timely. Update: Bernadina has been diagnosed with a right knee contusion. He's - you guessed it - day to day.
