Bernadina posts two RBIs in WBC debut, Wang excels

JUPITER, Fla. - Spoiler alert: I'm about to provide updates of the Netherlands/Korea World Baseball Classic game, which is apparently airing on a time delay on MLB Network. I got scolded on Twitter by one fan who said that I ruined the game by posting an update on Roger Bernadina, so be warned, everyone. If you're really into the game on TV and don't want me to spoil your entire morning, stop reading now. Batting third in the Netherlands' lineup, Bernadina went 1-for-5 with a double and two RBIs as the Netherlands beat Korea 5-0 in a first-round WBC contest held in Taiwan. Bernadina left five men on base, but brought in a run with a groundout in the fifth and then doubled to right in the seventh, scoring Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons. The Nationals outfielder played all nine innings in center field for the Netherlands, which picks up a nice opening-round win over a tough Korean squad that finished as the WBC runner-up in 2009. Meanwhile, Chien-Ming Wang pitched six scoreless innings in the other WBC game early today, leading Chinese Taipei to a 4-1 win over Australia. Wang needed just 61 pitches to get through his six innings. He allowed four hits, struck out two and used his sinker to get three double play balls off the bats of Australian hitters. The veteran right-hander, who was trying to return from a major shoulder injury suffered in 2009, couldn't seem to stay healthy with the Nationals the last two seasons. Wang went 2-3 with a 6.68 ERA over 32 1/3 innings last year, battling hamstring and hip injuries that limited his effectiveness. Wang is hoping to use his WBC outings to land a major league contract with another club. The Yankees are reportedly one of the teams monitoring Wang in the WBC.
