Best of 2019: April 9 comeback win at Philly

Entering final week of 2019, let's take a look back at some of the most exciting and intriguing regular season wins for the Nationals on their road to their first World Series title. We will focus on a handful signature wins, looking at one or two from each month. Here a few of the best regular season victories of 2019. We start with a comeback thriller in Philadelphia. No. 5: April 9, 2019: Nationals 10, Phillies 6 (10) Stephen Strasburg allowed six runs early and the Nats found themselves in an early hole. He left with his team down by five. Down 6-2 in the seventh the Nats began their comeback with a two-run homer from Yan Gomes. Howie Kendrick cut into that lead with a homer as well to make it 6-5. Down to their last strike in the ninth, Victor Robles launched a solo shot to left field off of Phillies reliever Edubray Ramos to tie the game at 6-6. The Nats then unleashed their offense again in the tenth inning with four runs, highlighted by Juan Soto's three-run shot to the upper deck just inside the right field foul pole to make it 9-6. "I felt very proud of myself in that moment," Juan Soto told reporters, via interpreter Octavio Martinez. "I actually kept telling myself to get on base, then I ended up hitting the home run. It was just a big relief. It was one of those feelings you can't describe, and I thank God for that, that opportunity and that outcome. That was just a great feeling." The Nats and Soto would never have had a chance if it was not for Sean Doolittle. Former Nats slugger Bryce Harper had crushed a homer early off of Strasburg. And with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, he was poised to ruin the game again for the Nats in the Phillies last at-bat. But Doolittle struck out Harper to send the game into extra innings. "To be able to come back, that's the kind of stuff that does amazing things for the group coming together, for team chemistry, the confidence of this group," closer Sean Doolittle said to reporters. "That was such a fun win to be a part of. I'm glad I got to experience it." The Nats also won the final game of the series in a 15-1 laugher, taking the series 2 games to 1. It was a nice bounce back for the Nats after losing two of the first three matchups with Harper and the upstart Phillies to begin the season. The Nats won the season series with the Phillies 14-5, going 5-4 at Citizens Bank Park. The Nats only loss to the Phillies at home was their first matchup April 2, 8-2.
