Betemit has cartilage tear in wrist

The MRI taken on Wilson Betemit's right wrist this morning revealed a small cartilage tear and a bone bruise. Betemit will receive a cortisone injection later today and fly down to Sarasota tomorrow morning. The Orioles will shut him down for a week before he's cleared to begin baseball activities. Betemit hasn't played since Saturday, making him eligible to come off the disabled list on Aug. 27 - a realistic target date, according to manager Buck Showalter. Joe Mahoney flew into Baltimore from Norfolk and was expected to arrive shortly before 5 p.m. The Orioles considered bringing him here last night, but they decided to wait for Betemit's MRI results. Showalter exchanged text messages with outfielder Nolan Reimold earlier today. Reimold continues to rehab after undergoing surgery to remove a herniated disc in his neck and fuse the vertebrae. He's four weeks into an eight-week rehab process, putting him a little ahead of schedule. Steve Johnson will start Saturday in Detroit unless he's needed tonight in relief. Tommy Hunter, who will start on Friday, flew to Detroit earlier today. Hunter will oppose Justin Verlander. Johnson is slated to oppose Rick Porcello on Saturday, with Wei-Yin Chen opposing Doug Fister on Sunday. Jason Hammel's knee felt fine after yesterday's bullpen session. He just wasn't quite as sharp this time. The current plan calls for Hammel to throw another bullpen session on Saturday, working up to around 40 pitches. Steve Tolleson was activated from the minor league disabled list and went 1-for-4 with two RBIs as Triple-A Norfolk's starting shortstop.
