Big Apple taking another big bite out of Tillman (O's win 11-5)

NEW YORK - The Yankees don't have Mark Teixeira or Alex Rodriguez tonight, but they still have Chris Tillman's number. They grabbed a 3-0 lead only three batters into the game, and it took Tillman 15 pitches to record his first out. Two more runs scored, as the Yankees sent nine batters to the plate and Matt Lindstrom began to warm in the bullpen. Four of the five runs were earned. Tillman committed an error on Ichiro Suzuki's comebacker before Russell Martin's RBI single. Yes, it's that kind of night for Tillman, who was 1-2 with a 12.27 ERA in three career starts here spanning 11 innings. The Yankees were batting .448 against him, and they're not easing up on him tonight. Tillman is 1-3 with an 8.71 ERA in five career starts against the Yankees, and he hasn't completed five innings in his last three outings. This could be another short one. Derek Jeter doubled and scored on Curtis Granderson's single, and Robinson Cano broke an 0-for-14 slump with a two-run homer. The tone had been set. Nick Swisher singled before Raul Ibanez bounced to Tillman, who got the force at second. Eric Chavez singled and Tillman mishandled Ichiro's bouncer as another run scored. Ichiro was credited with an RBI. Martin followed with an RBI single, but he did Tillman a favor by getting caught in a rundown. If you're scoring at home, mark it down as 7-2-4-3-4. Tillman allowed six hits and threw 36 pitches, 17 for strikes. Lindstrom is no longer warming, but he's apparently the Orioles' long man tonight. Is it too late to trade for one? Update: The Orioles scored seven runs in the top of the second inning, and the Yankees are trying to pass Ivan Nova through waivers. OK, the second part isn't true. The Orioles sent 10 batters to the plate, and all seven runs scored with two outs. Mark Reynolds had an RBI double, Omar Quintanilla had a two-run single and Chris Davis hit a grand slam after Nick Markakis singled and J.J. Hardy walked. Davis is 9-for-22 with three homers and 10 RBIs during a six-game hitting streak. Lew Ford doubled in the third inning for his first hit since Sept. 21, 2007, and he scored on Wilson Betemit's double, giving the Orioles an 8-5 lead. Yes, it's that kind of night. Update II: Adam Jones led off the fifth with a double and scored with two out on Betemit's single. Orioles 9, Yankees 5. Eight of the Orioles' runs have scored with two outs. They're 5-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Tillman has retired 13 of 15 batters since Martin's RBI single in the first. He's gotten through five innings with his pitch count at 95. Take away the first inning, and Tillman is working on a two-hit shutout. Update III: Markakis has three more hits from the leadoff spot, including his 10th home run - a two-run shot off former Oriole Clay Rapada in the eighth inning. The 11 runs are one short of the Orioles' season high. They beat the Pirates 12-6 on June 14. Going back to Ford, he went 1,774 days between major league hits.
