An uplifting story, plus a Chris Young update (Nats trail)
A large group of Nationals players and coaches made their way over to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda this afternoon, giving some injured veterans a thrill and getting quite a cool experience themselves. Eleven Nats players made the trip, a group that included Adam LaRoche, Danny Espinosa, Ian Desmond, Chad Tracy, Tyler Moore, Steve Lombardozzi, Ryan Mattheus, Tyler Clippard, Drew Storen, Craig Stammen and Zach Duke. Bench coach Randy Knorr and bullpen coach Jim Lett...

Davey Johnson's theories on Detwiler's success, Nats' struggles

Davey Johnson's theories on Detwiler's success, Nats' struggles
Prior to last night's game, MASN cameras caught Nationals manager Davey Johnson doing push-ups against the dugout bench. Yes, the Nats' 70-year-old skipper was getting in a quick workout before first pitch. Dan Steinberg of The Post has the GIF of the push-ups. This afternoon, Johnson was asked what exactly was going on there. "I was trying to get some blood flowing, that's all I was doing," Johnson said, breaking into a smile. "I didn't know it was gonna be televised. Trying to get...

Nats claim left-hander Xavier Cedeno, option him to Triple-A (with lineups)
The Nationals have added another left-handed reliever to their organization, claiming Xavier Cedeno off waivers from the Astros and optioning him to Triple-A Syracuse. Cedeno, 26, posted an 11.37 ERA over five appearances spanning 6 1/3 innings with Houston this season. He allowed 10 hits and 11 runs (eight earned) with seven walks, three strikeouts and hit two batters. Last season, Cedeno's numbers were far better. He worked in 44 games with the Astros, putting up a 3.77 ERA over 31...

Waiting for the offense to come around

Waiting for the offense to come around
It seems there's been a bit of a power outage in D.C. over the last couple weeks. The Nationals, a team that on paper has a balanced, skilled lineup with a nice mix of guys who reach base at a high clip and can mash the ball out of the park, have seen their bats go quiet recently, to the surprise to some of the guys in the clubhouse. "We're not getting the big hits," Adam LaRoche said. "A lot of quick innings. Not a ton of baserunners. And five or six guys that aren't swinging the bat...

Dan Haren: "It's close. It's going to turn around"

Dan Haren: "It's close. It's going to turn around"
Dan Haren was asked after tonight's game whether he viewed his outing - in which he allowed three runs on six hits over five-plus innings - as a step in the right direction after failing to reach the sixth inning in any of his previous three starts. "Not really," Haren said. "I want more out of myself than five innings, giving up three runs and (Craig) Stammen bailing me out of that jam. I've been around for 10 years. I'm used to throwing seven, eight innings every time. I've thrown 200...

Johnson discusses Haren, offensive struggles after 3-2 loss
As Davey Johnson sat down in front of reporters for his postgame press conference tonight, he let out a deep sigh. The Nationals are now 10-9 on the season after tonight's 3-2 loss to the Cardinals. They're treading water at the moment, searching for signs that they're making progress and on the way to snapping out of this funk to open the 2013 season. Dan Haren failed to retire a batter in the sixth inning for the fourth straight start but, compared to his previous three outings, tonight...

A mixed bag from Haren (Nats lose 3-2)

A mixed bag from Haren (Nats lose 3-2)
We saw two sides of Dan Haren tonight. For most of his first five innings of work, we got the sharp, effective Haren. That Haren has good control, works quickly and shows impressive movement with his sinker and offspeed stuff. Haren looked especially good in his first two innings, as well as the fourth, where he was able to work around a couple hits and let his defenders put in work behind him. In the sixth inning, we saw the other Haren - the one that was on the mound through the veteran...

Haren trails again (Rendon's first major league hit is a big one)

Haren trails again (Rendon's first major league hit is a big one)
There haven't been many innings that Dan Haren has completed this season in which he's held a lead. Four innings, to be precise. Haren trails again after three innings here tonight after allowing a two-run double to Allen Craig in the third. Denard Span nearly made a remarkable grab of Craig's deep fly ball to the wall in left-center, leaping at the fence and making a stab at the ball. The Nationals' center fielder got his glove on it but couldn't squeeze the third out, and the ball...

LaRoche on Nats' defensive struggles: "Very surprising"

LaRoche on Nats' defensive struggles: "Very surprising"
The Cardinals are back in D.C. for the first time since they rolled out of here with a dramatic series win over the Nationals in the National League Division Series last October, and while Nats players have put that loss behind them and know this is a new season, they admit it'd be nice to get a little payback over the next three days. "Are we going to make it a bigger deal than what it is? No," Danny Espinosa said. "Would it be nice to beat them? Yeah." Said Adam LaRoche: "I don't...

Soriano unavailable after birth of child, plus notes on Haren, Rendon, Ramos
A little more than six months after Drew Storen allowed four runs to the Cardinals in the ninth inning in Game 5 of the National League Division Series, he might be called upon for another save opportunity against St. Louis. Rafael Soriano is not with the Nationals today after leaving to be with his wife in New York for the birth of the couple's second child, a boy. As a result, Storen would get the ninth inning if the Nats get a save opportunity. "We've been kind of planning this day for...

Haren hoping to turn things around against the Cards

Haren hoping to turn things around against the Cards
The Cardinals return to D.C. today for the first time since rudely knocking the Nationals out of the 2012 playoffs in Game 5 of the National League Division Series. I'm guessing Pete Kozma won't be getting too many free beers in the district over the next three days. The Cards, like the Nats, have a 10-8 record on the season. They've won six of their last 10. Shelby Miller, St. Louis' young stud, will take the mound tonight. He's gotten off to a really nice start to the season, going...

Returning home still searching for some answers

Returning home still searching for some answers
Leading into this week's sets of games against the Cardinals and Reds, two tough, talented playoff teams from a year ago, the Nationals went on the road last week to face the two National League East teams everyone expects to finish at the bottom of the division for a second straight season. Six games against the Marlins and Mets? That'll be the remedy for whatever has been ailing this Nationals team early on this season, right? Not really. Instead of getting things back on track in Miami...

Nats yet to get to Gee (Nats lose game, series in New York)

Nats yet to get to Gee (Nats lose game, series in New York)
Over his previous two outings coming into today's start against the Nationals, Mets right-hander Dillon Gee had allowed 12 earned runs and 17 hits over 7 2/3 innings. This afternoon, Gee has looked like a completely different guy. The Nationals have been held scoreless through five innings, managing just three hits off Gee and putting only one runner into scoring position thus far. Gee has struck out six Nationals, this after he'd put up eight Ks through his first three starts of 2013...

Zimmerman officially lands on DL, Rendon recalled (Rendon hitting sixth)
It's official: Anthony Rendon now finds himself on the Nationals' big league roster. The Nats have placed Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain this morning. The DL stint will be retroactive to April 18. Taking Zimmerman's spot on the roster - and in the Nationals' lineup - will be Rendon, the organization's top prospect according to Baseball America. The 22-year-old Rendon, who was the Nats' No. 1 pick (sixth overall) in the 2011 first-year player's...

A sweet Friday night matchup

A sweet Friday night matchup
If you don't happen to have anything planned for tonight, I suggest you find a seat on your sofa or local bar stool around 7:05 p.m., and flip on MASN2 HD. Tonight's pitching matchup in New York is a really good one: Stephen Strasburg against Matt Harvey. The 24-year-old Harvey might have just 13 career starts under his belt, but he's already making quite an impression in the big leagues. Harvey has started this season 3-0 with a filthy 0.82 ERA in his three starts. He's gone 22 innings,...

Detwiler delivers few surprises but exceptional results

Detwiler delivers few surprises but exceptional results
So let me get this straight: Bryce Harper missed Tuesday's game with flu-like symptoms and was still feeling ill on Wednesday, but talked his way into the Nationals' lineup anyway. Harper told reporters in Miami that he threw up during the second inning during last night's game and felt his head spinning at the plate. Then he goes out and smacks four hits, including a double, and drives in a run. This guy is something special, all right. And at this point, I truly don't understand any...

More of the same from Ross Detwiler (Nats win 6-1)
Ross Detwiler's third start of the season has gone much the same as his first two. And that's a good thing for the Nationals as they look to leave Miami with a series win. Through four innings tonight, Detwiler has held the Marlins scoreless, allowing four hits and striking out four. He's thrown 61 pitches thus far, 45 for strikes. In typical Detwiler fashion, he's been attacking opposing hitters tonight, throwing 56 fastballs among those 61 pitches. Despite the heavy dose of two- and...

Harper returns to Nats lineup; Span, Espinosa still out
The Nationals get the reigning National League Rookie of the Year back in their lineup, but their leadoff hitter and starting second baseman are still sidelined. Bryce Harper returns to the Nationals lineup tonight after missing yesterday's game with flu-like symptoms. Center fielder Denard Span (flu-like symptoms) and second baseman Danny Espinosa (right wrist) will not start tonight's series finale against the Marlins, however. This will be the third straight game that Espinosa has missed...

MASN hires Julie Alexandria as new Nationals sideline reporter
There's a new member of MASN's Nationals broadcast team. MASN has hired Julie Alexandria as its new sideline reporter for Nationals broadcasts, the network confirmed this afternoon. Alexandria will begin appearing on-air as a part of MASN's in-game broadcasts as well as the "Nats Xtra" pregame and postgame shows sometime during the next homestand. Alexandria most recently worked as a sideline reporter for FOX Sports, covering college football. She was part of the broadcast team that...

Taking a closer look at two struggling veterans

Taking a closer look at two struggling veterans
The Nationals were on the losing end of an 8-2 ballgame in Miami last night, but that's one game of 162. Of bigger concern right now are the struggles of two Nats veterans, guys who appear to be battling some confidence issues at this point. Let's start with Dan Haren. The 32-year-old right-hander, who signed a one-year, $13 million deal with the Nats this offseason, was facing a Marlins team that had scored just 1.8 runs per game entering Tuesday's contest, by far the fewest in the...
