More on Treinen's impressive first MLB start

More on Treinen's impressive first MLB start
There are scouts and talent evaluators both inside and outside the Nationals organization who feel that Blake Treinen would make for a terrific late-inning reliever at the big league level. He has the velocity for it, throwing a fastball that has been clocked at 100 mph in the past, possesses a hard sinker that gets plenty of ground balls, and also mixes in a slider that is an effective pitch for him. But the 25-year-old Treinen showed yesterday that if the Nationals would like to continue...

Treinen optioned to Triple-A after first major league start, corresponding move TBA

Treinen optioned to Triple-A after first major league start, corresponding move TBA
Blake Treinen pitched his heart out tonight in the Nationals' 8-3 loss to the Dodgers, allowing just three unearned runs over five-plus innings against a dangerous Los Angeles lineup. Now Treinen will head back to Triple-A Syracuse and try and build off a strong first major league start. The Nationals optioned Treinen back to Syracuse after tonight's game, but they are not yet ready to announce a corresponding roster move. "We don't know that at this point," manager Matt Williams said....

Looking back on last night ... and early this morning (with note)

Looking back on last night ... and early this morning (with note)
A departure from the press box after 2 a.m. sure doesn't lend itself well to early morning blog posts. But I figured I had plenty to discuss after last night's wackiness. Blake Treinen will make his first major league start tonight. Who will the 25-year-old oppose? Only the best pitcher on the planet in Clayton Kershaw. What type of lineup will Treinen face? One that features Adrian Gonzalez, Hanley Ramirez, Matt Kemp, Carl Crawford, Dee Gordon (don't scoff, he's hitting .342 and has stolen...

Treinen to start Tuesday, Mattheus optioned (with McLouth update)
We have finally learned who will start Tuesday night (or, shall I say, later on today) for the Nationals. It'll be right-hander Blake Treinen, who will be called up from Triple-A Syracuse. Right-handed reliever Ryan Mattheus will be optioned to Syracuse to make room for Treinen on the roster, manager Matt Williams announced after tonight's 4-0 Nats win, which featured a 3-hour, 17-minute rain delay. This will be Treinen's first major league start. He made a brief stint with the Nats...

Hairston activated from disabled list

Hairston activated from disabled list
The Nationals this afternoon activated outfielder Scott Hairston (strained left oblique) from the 15-day disabled list. He'll be in uniform and available for tonight's opener of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Nationals Park. To make room for Hairston on the 25-man roster, outfielder Steven Souza Jr. was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse. In two stints with the Nats this season, Souza has gone 1-for-8 (.125). Hairston was placed on the DL on April 6, a day after injuring...

Hanging in and about to get a few "shots in the arm"

Hanging in and about to get a few "shots in the arm"
I wrote just the other day about the parity in the National League East, but even since then, the layout in the division has gotten more interesting. All five NL East teams now have above-.500 records. Only 1 1/2 games separate first place from last place. That's parity, folks. The Nationals could have left Philadelphia atop the division had they been able to close out their series with the Phillies on a positive note. Instead, yesterday's 1-0 loss finished off a 3-2 road trip and left the...

Espinosa gets a day off in series finale vs. Phillies
PHILADELPHIA - Danny Espinosa will get the day off, and Kevin Frandsen will play third base against his former team in today's series finale. Gio Gonzalez will start for the Nationals, while the Phillies will give the ball to right-hander Roberto Hernandez (formerly known as Fausto Carmona). Cole Hamels was originally scheduled to start today for the Phils, but he was scratched due to the flu. About the first-inning deficits

About the first-inning deficits
PHILADELPHIA - The comebacks are nice, obviously. Nine comeback wins in 30 games is pretty darn impressive. The problem there is that in order to come back to win a game, you have to trail. And the Nationals would prefer that they don't trail in games as often as they have. Yesterday marked the eighth time already this season that Nationals pitchers have allowed at least three runs in the first inning. That's 27 percent of the time. Not good. What is there to explain these first-inning...

Williams discusses Nats' 7-2 loss
PHILADELPHIA - Just like last night, the Nationals trailed the Phillies 3-0 before the first inning was complete. Unlike last night, the Nats weren't able to come back and pick up the win. Ryan Howard's three-run homer off Tanner Roark in the first put the Nats in another early hole, and the Phillies continued to add on from there, making it 7-0 by the end of the fifth. Roark was coming off a three-hit shutout his last time out, but he didn't have his good stuff today, and the Phillies...

Some extra takeaways from last night

Some extra takeaways from last night
PHILADELPHIA - I'm really trying not to beat the comeback angle into the ground, but the Nationals just keep overtaking late deficits late in games, forcing me to write about it. Nine comeback wins in 29 games played this season. Pretty amazing. Last night, the Nats chipped away against one of the top starters in the league in Cliff Lee and then again came from behind late, scoring three runs in the eighth inning off Phillies relievers. Nats hitters are now batting a collective .282 with a...

Span on Cliff Lee quick-pitching him up and in: "I didn't like that at all"

Span on Cliff Lee quick-pitching him up and in: "I didn't like that at all"
PHILADELPHIA - While there was minimal pushing and shoving in the top of the fifth inning when benches cleared between the Nationals and Phillies, and while the game went on without further incident, tonight's Denard Span-Cliff Lee spat might be something to keep in mind the next 18 times these teams play each other in 2014. Bad blood can build quickly between division rivals. Span came up in the fifth with runners at second and third and one out. He stepped into the batter's box and started...

Williams meets with the media after Nats' 5-3 comeback win

Williams meets with the media after Nats' 5-3 comeback win
PHILADELPHIA - Another comeback win. Make that nine on the season. The Nationals trailed 3-0 after one inning of play when Jayson Werth's dropped fly ball in foul territory kept the inning alive for Marlon Byrd's three-run shot. They scored one in the third on Tyler Moore's homer to get on the board. They brought across another in the fifth on Denard Span's RBI groundout. (More on that later.) Then came the eighth, when the Nats had five straight hits off Phillies relievers to open the...

LaRoche back in Nats lineup, Moore in left
PHILADELPHIA - After sitting out Wednesday's game against the Astros with a tight quad, Adam LaRoche is back in the Nationals lineup today in the series opener against the Phillies. LaRoche got two days of rest with yesterday's off-day, and apparently is good to go today. Tyler Moore will play left field tonight, with Kevin Frandsen and Nate McLouth both sitting. The Phillies will send Cliff Lee to the mound tonight, while Stephen Strasburg will get the ball for Matt Williams' squad. For...

A common thread within the division

A common thread within the division
PHILADELPHIA - A little over a month into the 2014 regular season, there isn't a single National League East team with a sub-.500 record. Wait, what? The Marlins, who lost 100 games last season, are now 14-14 on the season after finishing off a three-game sweep of the Braves. Wait, what? The Mets, who were seven games under .500 last year and are without ace Matt Harvey, are 15-12 on the young season and actually have a positive run differential. Wait, what? The Phillies, who decided to...

Plenty of positives to point out

Plenty of positives to point out
PHILADELPHIA - If you're reading this, that means that things are back up and running again. So that's a good thing. Apologies for the technical issues yesterday. Apparently the storms knocked out our server for a while, but those issues are behind us. Let's talk some baseball. The Nationals got the job done in Houston, sweeping their brief two-game set with Bo Porter's Astros, who are now 9-19 on the season. Yeesh. The Nats landed in Philadelphia around 3:30 a.m. and now will get their...

Souza gets first start, LaRoche takes a seat, Werth at DH
HOUSTON - Steven Souza Jr. will get his first major league start tonight when the Nationals wrap up a quick, two-game series with the Houston Astros. He will play right field and bat eighth. First baseman Adam LaRoche is sitting with a tight quad. Combined with tomorrow's scheduled off-day, LaRoche hopes to be ready for Friday's game at Philadelphia. With LaRoche out, shortstop Ian Desmond moves into the cleanup spot. Jayson Werth is listed as tonight's designated hitter, since the Nats are...

LaRoche is traditionally a slow starter. That's no secret to anyone who has followed the Nationals the last few seasons. That only makes the way that LaRoche has started the 2014 season that much more impressive. After going 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs in last night's win over the Astros,...

Clubhouse reactions to Span's grab, Frandsen's blind stab and more

Clubhouse reactions to Span's grab, Frandsen's blind stab and more
HOUSTON - Two ridiculous defensive plays were made by Nationals outfielders tonight. One of them resulted in an out. The other only temporarily held one runner from scoring, but was still just baffling. Denard Span's basket catch while falling to the ground on the hill in center and Kevin Frandsen's blind backhanded pick of a ball off the scoreboard in left are the two plays I'm describing. And those plays were blowing up social media during tonight's game. Your browser does not support...

Williams discusses Nats' 4-3 win over Astros
HOUSTON - Another comeback win. That makes eight on the season. Ho, hum. The Nationals trailed 3-2 heading to the eighth inning tonight, but they came back on the Astros with a couple of rallies, both times leading to Adam LaRoche RBI knocks. His double off the wall in left-center scored Jayson Werth (who got a great read on the play) from first and LaRoche then gave the Nats the lead in the ninth with a run-scoring single to center, bringing in Denard Span (who had reached on a leadoff walk...
