Bob Carpenter nominated for call of controversial moment in Max Scherzer's near perfect game

It was one of the most controversial moments - not just in the Nationals' 2015 season, but in the team's history - and MASN's Bob Carpenter has been recognized for his efforts in bringing it to you.

Carpenter has been nominated for the Esurance MLB Award for his call of when Pirates pinch-hitter Jose Tabata was hit in the elbow with a two-out, two-strike pitch in the ninth inning of Max Scherzer's near-perfect game.

Scherzer was coming off a one-hitter in Milwaukee on June 16, when he struck out a then career-high 16 batters and allowed only two baserunners. He had retired the first 26 batters he faced against the Pirates on June 20 at Nats Park and was one strike away from the first perfect game in Nationals history and the first in Major League Baseball since Felix Hernandez's in 2012.

Then Tabata came to the plate, and on a 2-2 count, was hit on his left elbow guard by Scherzer's 86 mph slider. Despite the confusion and restlessness by the crowd, and disbelief of color analyst F.P Santangelo ("Are you kidding me?"), Carpenter was able to keep composed in calling the situation on live television.

Carpenter's "Did it hit him?!" call sank the hearts of Nats fans watching at home. But much like Scherzer's eventual first career no-hitter, winning "Best Call, TV" would be a nice prize for missing out on calling a perfect game. Besides, little did Carp know he would be calling his third no-no in a little over year when Scherzer thew his second just a few months later.
