The Nationals and Orioles tangle in Game 1 of the Beltway Series, D.C. edition, from Nationals Park.
Prior to the game, the Nationals announced that outfielder Bryce Harper and right-hander Stephen Strasburg have been named co-National League Players of the Week. The duo were back-to-back No. 1 overall selections by the Nationals in the First-Year Player Draft in 2009 and 2010.
In seven games last week, Harper hit .519 (14-for-27) with a double, five walks, five homers and 10 RBIs.
Strasburg set a Nationals record with 37 strikeouts in his past three starts. He went 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA in 15 innings in two starts on September 15 and September 20.
Tonight, left-hander Gio Gonzalez (11-7, 3.83 ERA) will take on right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez (11-9, 4.31).
Gonzalez started against the Orioles July 10, going six innings and scattering six hits, with one run, three walks and five strikeouts. An Adam Jones solo homer was the only blemish. The Orioles came back to win the game 3-2 on a walk-off homer from Jonathan Schoop. The Nationals rebounded to win the last two games of the series.
