Davis out of lineup again with "little viral bug"

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Orioles first baseman Chris Davis remains out of tonight's lineup because of a viral infection that has bothered his stomach for the past few days.

"From what I got from the doctor yesterday, it's just kind of a little viral bug," he said. "You want the details?"

I don't know. Do I?

Chris-Davis-gray-close.png"Um ... I woke up two nights ago feeling pretty crummy," Davis continued. "Had some reflux. We'll use that word. Just kind of an uneasy stomach, wasn't able to keep anything down. And yesterday, kind of the same thing. Just a little bit less aggressive, a little bit better.

"Today, I feel better, but I'm kind of drained. Try to get as much food or nutrition that I can and hopefully be in there tomorrow."

Mark Trumbo played first base last night and Trey Mancini is starting at first tonight while Davis sits on the bench.

Manager Buck Showalter probably could use Davis tonight if he needed a pinch-hitter.

"Yeah, I feel like I am (available)," Davis said. "We'll see what the day brings. We have a few more hours before game time and I told Buck I'd keep him posted, so we'll see what happens."

Davis is batting .217/.306/.457 with eight doubles, a triple, 17 home runs, 35 RBIs and 111 strikeouts in 254 at-bats. He's 6-for-37 with three home runs and nine RBIs since coming off the disabled list.

The virus apparently isn't the same type that knocked Davis off his feet last year in New York and swept through the clubhouse.

"I don't think it was quite as bad," he said. "That was a three- or four-day thing and I was in the hospital the first night with that. Like I said, the way it was described to me, it was just kind of a viral thing."

Meanwhile, infielder Ryan Flaherty will report to Double-A Bowie on Thursday to begin his injury rehab assignment.

Pitcher Hunter Harvey will continue his assignment Wednesday with the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League team. He'll pitch again a week later in the GCL before reporting to short-season Single-A Aberdeen.

Shortstop J.J. Hardy got a haircut.

Closer Zach Britton sat at his locker today, still a member of the team.

That's all I've got.
