Right-hander Max Scherzer allowed a solo homer to Robinson Canó to begin the scoring in the first inning as the Nationals welcomed in the Mets. Scherzer has struck out six in the first three innings.
Mets starter Jacob deGrom has struck out four in three frames, including the side in the second.
The Nats had a good shot at scoring in the third. Victor Robles led off with a double and Adam Eaton singled to put runners on the corners. But with one out, Anthony Rendon's grounder to third base was fielded by Jeff McNeil, who threw out Eaton at second.
Robles broke for home. Canó then fired home to catcher Wilson Ramos, who relayed to McNeil to complete the rundown and double play, ending the threat.
After three innings, the Mets lead the Nats 1-0.
Update: Scherzer has 10 strikeouts through six innings. It's the 83rd time in his career he has reached double-digits in strikeouts in a game.
Trea Turner led off sixth with a single and stole second and third bases. He has three stolen bases in the game. But deGrom managed to retired Rendon, Juan Soto and Ryan Zimmerman to end the threat.
After six innings, the Mets lead the Nats 1-0.
Update II: DeGrom finished six innings, allowing no runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk. He threw 93 pitches, 59 for strikes. Interestingly, down 1-0 in bottom of seventh with two outs, manager Davey Martinez allowed Scherzer to bat for himself. He struck out looking against reliever Seth Lugo.
After seven, the Mets lead the Nats 1-0.
