Eyre next man up? (updated)

The Orioles apparently are on the verge of purchasing reliever Willie Eyre's contract from Triple-A Norfolk. Eyre isn't heading to Baltimore at this moment, but I'm anticipating another roster move within the next day or two. Update: The Orioles could announce Eyre's promotion after tonight's game or before tomorrow's series-opener against the Tigers. The club could choose to send down a reliever or a position player. Third baseman Josh Bell, whose playing time is limited again with Chris Davis' return to the lineup, is one possibility. I'm told there are a few directions the Orioles could go to make room. Eyre, 33, has made three appearances with the Tides since signing with the Orioles and hasn't allowed a run in 3 1/3 innings. He's given up one hit, walked one, struck out one and hit a batter. Eyre was 4-5 with a 3.48 ERA in 39 games with Triple-A Sacramento before opting out of his contract. Meanwhile, Bell is still waiting for the results of the MRI taken yesterday on his left side. He participated in early infield drills and took batting practice. Also today, left-hander Zach Britton threw in the bullpen and is expected to start Sunday at Double-A Bowie. The other option was giving him an extra work day and holding him back until Monday at Single-A Frederick. Manager Buck Showalter confirmed that pitcher Jake Arrieta will undergo surgery tomorrow to remove a bone spur from his right elbow. "I look forward to Jake taking care of something that was a challenge for him as the year wore on this year," Showalter said. "It felt good early on. I remember the outing he had here Opening Day at home. He ended up the year with 10 wins, did end up the year with a 5 ERA. A lot of it had to do with, I think, his command that challenged him as the season wore on. "The rehab on this, if everything goes well tomorrow, is just a tissue healing from the incision and other things. If everything goes well tomorrow, I'm looking forward to him having that challenge out of the way. It was a physical thing for him, but it had gotten to the point where it was a mental thing, too. It was very frustrating for him, because he knew what he is capable of doing. He just couldn't do it as games wore on. "He may come through here in September. I know he's going to go to Austin after the surgery. I'm anxious to hear what Dr. (Lewis) Yocum had to say about what he actually ended up doing and what he found once you get in there." Arrieta underwent an MRA yesterday, which includes a dye injection in the elbow. "So he knew exactly what he was dealing with," Showalter said, "but it's a challenging surgery."
