Four perfect innings for Gio Gonzalez (Cubs finally notch a hit in sixth)

Like Stephen Strasburg yesterday, Gio Gonzalez has been dominant through four innings today. We'll see if things go better for Gonzalez the rest of the way out than they did for Strasburg, who melted down in the fifth. Gonzalez has been perfect through four, retiring all 12 Cubs hitters he's seen, with three strikeouts. He's thrown just 43 pitches thus far, 29 for strikes. The velocity on Gonzalez's fastball has been a touch down today - he's sitting at 92-93 mph - but the Cubs haven't been able to square up much at all. An Anthony Rizzo line drive right back at Gonzalez was probably the best-struck ball the Cubs have had through four frames. Gonzalez was handed a 1-0 lead in the first when Ryan Zimmerman's double off the right-center field wall allowed Denard Span to come around to score. Zimmerman is 2-for-2 today with an RBI and a stolen base. Both teams have been frustrated by home plate umpire John Tumpane's strike zone today. It's been, uh, liberal. And that's putting it nicely. Both Zimmerman and Ian Desmond took issue with strike calls in which it appeared the pitch was off the plate away. Desmond took a called third strike that looked well off the outer corner. As you can see here, Tumpane has been giving a very wide zone, especially to right-handed hitters. Gonzalez is taking full advantage. Update: Gonzalez is now perfect through five. Fifteen Cubs up, 15 Cubs down. He's got five strikeouts and has needed just 56 pitches so far. You might want to flip your TVs to MASN if you haven't already. Update II: Well, it was fun while it lasted. The perfect game and no-hit bid both came to an end in the sixth, when Dioner Navarro reached on an infield single deep in the hole at shortstop. Gonzalez got a nice hand from the Nats Park crowd as he turned back to the mound after Navarro's single. He then walked Starlin Castro and allowed a single to Cody Ransom to load the bases with two outs, but was able to work out of the jam by getting Anthony Rizzo to ground out to first. It's still 1-0 Nats mid-way through the sixth.
