PHOENIX - Fresh off Friday night's impressive pitching effort in a 3-0, one-hit shutout of the Diamondbacks, the Nationals now try to make it two in a row while Stephen Strasburg tries to make it eight in a row.
That would be eight wins in a row for Strasburg, the newly minted National League Picher of the Month for July, who has emerged with a W in each of his last seven starts. His last loss came way back on June 15. That actually remains the last time any of the Nats' top four starters (Strasburg, Max Scherzer, Patrick Corbin, AnÃbal Sánchez) took a loss. It's been quite a run for this rotation.
The Nationals only managed four hits Friday vs. rookie Alex Young and a pair of Diamondbacks relievers. They face an even tougher challenge tonight against lefty Robbie Ray. The onetime Nats draft pick hasn't matched his breakthrough campaign of 2017, but he remains one of the best strikeout pitchers in the league and a tough guy to beat.
The Nats had to scratch Howie Kendrick from Friday night's lineup only 10 minutes before gametime due to leg cramps. Kendrick once again isn't starting tonight, and you figure if he was healthy he'd be in there against the left-hander. Instead of Matt Adams, it'll be the ever-popular Gerardo Parra at first base tonight. Parra was a fan favorite here in Arizona back in 2009-13; alas, that was before the "Baby Shark" phenomenon.
