Every Josiah Gray start has been an event since the young right-hander arrived in Washington earlier this month. Tonight's game in Miami, though, becomes an even bigger event because of the fellow young right-hander who will be facing Gray: Edward Cabrera.
Cabrera, the Marlins' top pitching prospect, makes his major league debut. Which makes this a rare matchup between two pitchers who rank among the top 100 prospects in baseball. Cabrera has an electric arm, with a power sinker that reaches triple digits, and struck out 48 batters in only 29 1/3 innings at Triple-A Jacksonville. (He did, however, walk 19 batters over that same span.)
Gray, as you already know, has looked like the complete package in his four starts with the Nats. He has given up three or fewer runs in each outing. He has yet to walk more than two batters per start or give up more than five hits. The only blemish on his record: seven home runs allowed in 22 innings, though all were solo shots. Those remain the only earned runs he has given up.
Davey Martinez's lineup again has an intriguing name at the top: Lane Thomas. This will be the fourth straight game Victor Robles hasn't started, though he did come off the bench to play center field late in Tuesday's win. Given the fact Thomas has now reached base in 16 of 25 plate appearances since joining the club, it's hard to argue against him playing every day for now.
